Hey everybody. I was working on my site some today and realized that I had about 50 comments to go through. This is a very time taking process and I've realized that people will often leave the same comments saying "great content, keep up the great work, yada yada yada, etc. without unlocking my premium content 1st. This gave me the idea to remove my comments section in order to keep people from spamming my site to death. Do you think this is a good idea to make sure that they share the article in order to unlock the full page and also to be able to leave comments? I think it looks pretty good now and was just wanting to get some feedback on what you all though. Thanks alot

It's a preference on your part. Depending on what you want your project to be focused on. You can hire a VC to go through the comments.

I would have invented Google and Microsoft if I was born earlier.

Forcing people to share your article just to unlock the comment section is a terrible idea. You'll lose a ton of discussion that way and it makes you look bad.

Why can't you just install Akisment or another plugin that helps with spam?

I think OP's problem was he was getting a lot of comments, but it frustrates him he has to go through all of them, because most of them are 'worthless' -> just posts like 'good work', 'great post' etc.

As far as I understood, he had an area with locked content, and forced users to make a certain action to reveal that area, and the action was commenting.
Now he wants to change the action to social share.

In the end - it's your decision.
I would suggest you change your tactics - offer small portion of what you're hiding for free, and charge the full deal.

I disable comments and pingbacks on all over my site but the blog articles. Sadly spam is something you will have to deal with. Try higher captcha controls or something.

Yeah. I decided to unlock some more of the content to make up for taking out the comments unless they share. I don't think it is that bad and if somebody is interested enough to leave a comment, they should be willing to share as well. I kind of feel like it is a win-win because they are able to leave their comment, will help control spam that is usually just the same great job over and over, and I might get a new reader as well

As already mentioned it depends on your site. If it's a blog, then yes you need comments. A blog without comments is like a ghost town. Plus comments are a good way to inject social proof into your site. Your visitors see others reading and interacting with your content, and it could reinforce you know your talking about. They also get to see you interact with others. Shows others are visiting your site.

Yes, spam is a problem with blogs (guessing that is what you have), but there are many plugins these days to help it. One solution I use is Disqus comment plug-in. Eliminated pretty much all my spam. Plus you can black list, whitelist, and it has social sharing of comments. Might not be the perfect solution for everyone, but it works for me.

As for locking content, I agree, not the best idea to lock it all. How will people know it's worth unlocking if they can not see any of it? I think the best way to use content locking is for locking more advanced content, upgrades, ect. Give them some great free unlocked content and they will be more likely to unlocked the more. They think, wow, his free content is awesome, I gotta get more.

    Course just my opinions

Never check auto approve comment option because spammers can ruin your blog or website. One thing most important is that you shouldn't allow comments option on your web pages, but yes you can allow comments on your blog posts. While moderating comments you shouldn't approve any spam comment.

If you want to stop spam comments, you need to set a captcha option on your website.

I thought that strategy was disallowed at some social sharing sites...

I tried to find what Facebook said about that in the past, but didn't see anything. Did they change their policy?

Yes it is recommended that you open the comment section for your blog and yes spamming is a real pain. Besides CAPTCHA, another way to limit spam is to use a Facebook comment box. In my experience, when I used Facebook comment box, most of the commenters were real people engaging with the blog post.

Why don't you install Facebook comments instead? That way you don't have to worry about any of the commenting issues as you have mentioned above.

Yes I do, I love and need comments on my website. Without the comments my website would be to static. The interaction between the website and users/visitors is very important.

Comments are free content and you should never turn them down.

Sure sometimes a spammer finds you, but with just a mouse click or 2, he and all his comments are gone.

I leave the comments off on my sites. This is largely because the niche I am in attracts a lot of spam and decent comments don't come through too often.

Comments make your website more dynamic... the sad part is when you allow comments that also means lots of spam.

Feedback and discussions are important but if there is no constructive discussions is done then it is better to keep the comments off.
