Urgent help needed: Wordpress running out of memory?

Thank you, as far as can be determined the problem was solved: we found a parasitic file in a sub-folder of a pligg installation that was eating up our memory (I'm not saying it was a pligg file, just that's where it was found) - nothing to do with WordPress at all...

Hi,

Can anyone help here: I have a number of wordpress sites running on my server. Over the last few days the following memory-related error is cropping up regularly - to such an extent that Google's crawler has listed the error, and our rankings are falling:

"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 31457280 bytes exhausted (tried
to allocate 46080 bytes)..."

The Tech guys at my hosting company are saying the following:

"Is the Word Press which you are using a custom installation? It is currently using 30MB's of memory and if it uses any more there is a serious problem with the coding. Are you using the latest version of Word Press? We can up the limit more. However, this is not a good idea since it will put strain on the server. The memory limit is set by default to 16MB's. We then changed this to 20MB's and finally to 30MB's. I have spoken to our Application Specialist and he says that the problem is linked to bad code which is part of the open source condition. As stated, we can change the memory limit. However, we recommend that you locate other code which will run the same query."

I'm using various versions of WP on my various sites, and I'm using custom ProSense templates from Doshdosh.

Anyone the wiser to what might be happenning?

PS: This may or may not be relevant: Last weekend my database server "crashed" when one of my mailboxes was flooded with 7000 identical emails which were maliciously sent from an old mail-a-friend script that was lying around on one of my non-WP sites
