Wordpress query

Hi,

I don't know if this is in right section but please can anyone tell me (I'm very technically challenged) how I use an existing domain name for a new WP site that I want to put up.

I've uploaded WP to my hosting (Phew! - mops brow!) so how do I get rid of the files that the domain I want to use has now (it's already up and running but the design sucks!) and swap that domain name to new WP?

I don't know if that's understandable, please can anyone help?

    The answer to this question has a lot of dependencies!

    However, in the simplest terms the easiest way to do what you want would be to download your entire existing site to your PC so you have all the content.

    Then you could delete all the files in your current domain so that it's completely empty.

    Next you could install WordPress in the (now empty) domain. Remember you'll need to set up a database before you install WordPress.

    Finally you'll need to load up the content that you downloaded to your PC.

    Without more details that's all I could suggest for now, but feel free to reveal more details!

    Woah nelly! before you delete anything can we know what you are going to replace it with. You said wordpress but you didn't say what theme. Since the site is live (I'm assuming its the one in your signature but I may be wrong) no sense in taking it down until you know what you are going to replace it with. The standard default theme in Wordpress isn't much better.

    and before you delete anything please make sure you are in the right folder or you could screw up the site.

    The one I want to change is not the one in my signature - it's an even worse site than that!

    I just put up something that I'd put together using tables (that's all I know how to do!) on Kompozer to have the domain live.

    The domain I want to change to a wordpress one is an add-on to the main domain (if I understand it right) I have watched some tutorials but they are as clear as mud!

    The only reason I thought that I would change to WP is that so many people say how easy it is. I found a template that I would like to use - but that seems to complicate the matter even further!

    Would I be better just sticking with Kompozer and using a template to build a website?

    I'm sure all this is very simple - but anything is simple once you know how to do it!

    You can install WordPress on the domain without deleting any of the current files. WP can coexist with HTML files on the same domain or directory.

    The only thing you will need to do is rename any index.html and or index.htm files. Those two files usually show before the index.php file of the WP install. Say you rename it to oldindex.html, you can then see it, or any other .html or .htm file by its address:

    www. yoursite.com/onldindex.html

    This way after you get WP running you can easily look at your old files live online as you rebuild the site. You could even have the original index.html file show again by simply renaming the oldindex.html back to index.html.

    I highly suggest WP on the site.
