I have over 100 affiliate web sites that are over 7-8 years old. The designs are old and have not changed. In fact, all the sites have been neglected by me, and I just keep renewing the domain name evry year.

Now I am comsidering updating most of them.

Should I consider changing the web site design to accomodate today's search engines? If I update with a new design, will it make any differance in search engine rankings?

If you change the url structures, then yes, that could affect your search engine rankings in a bad way.

I dont think a new design will change much in your search engine rankings, but it might keep people on your site for more if its more stylish, more profesional and up to date; as long as it's easy to navigate.

If you have baely touched these websites in that long a period then yes a redeisgn could help dramatically. People think graphics when they say design but good web design today means looking at the underlying code and that CAN make a HUGE difference in SEO

You can change your website template, but not your website URLs.

If your URLs for the web pages are not SEO, then I would suggest changing them, read SEO in Website URL.

Another thing to note is that if you really do change the URLs of the web pages, I would suggest that you do a redirect from your old URLs to the new ones, this way you will not lost your old inlinks, and at the same time build up now and SEO ready URLs.

Site design can affect SERPs if you alter the alt tags weight or move some stuff into flash/JS code.
If you're not SEO-ing them then re-doing the pages will just do you good.
If you are - ensure the re-design updates the content to the new SE best known methods and that it complies with W3C standards for html and css.

i am not sure that the change in your website design affects your ranking but if you change your website design it will give a good look to your site so there may be new visitors to your site.

clean up the code. If they're really old, your content is probably still buried in html tables and such.

if the sites are old, they should be updated, old coding is bulky and not necessary, could probably use some tag cleanups, update the language and so on.
if the site is old with the typical spinning dollar signs, animations, heavy shadowed old text, the site won't instill any confidence in your visitors, especially if you are selling.
sometimes it doesn't take much, color updates, cleaner code and you might be ready to roll.
On the other hand, if those domain names are bringing significant income, don't mess with them!

If the sites are doing well then there is nothing to worry. Also if you are targeting an older age group then avoid making drastic changes to the site design. They are used to the old style of web pages and maybe intimidated by new flashy designs. It also depends on how computer savvy the site visitors are.

I think the design isn't the thing Search Engines look into its usually the backlinks they look for. But design could effect the bounce rate of the visitors. If your visitor average stay is above 3 minutes i think then you don't have to change the design either. Its good to alter the things as changes happen i think in past years CMS were n't available i 'll suggest you to use some CMS so you can better manage the content.
