Wordpress as Landing Page

Hi All,

Newbie here, first post! I've learned a tremendous amount by reading the forum over the past couple months but now its time to take action: I've been accepted at two AM programs and bought a domain and hosting and finally installed WP and played around with a bunch of themes. Tomorrow I'm going to actually sign up for a "pixel" for a few offers and start to

1) submit articles and
2) in a day or two start some PPC campaigns.

The problem is I'm not sure exactly how to configure my domain with WP to be most effective. My first thought was to use a review style WP theme that highlights images of each campaign, so for instance there would be four or eight small images greeting the customer, one of which would be the topic of the submitted ezinearticle or PPC ad spot. Then, the user would (hopefully) click on that image to get the detailed pre-sale post.

However some people say that the landing page should be only _one_ product, with a single call to action: getting the person to click on the affiliate offer page. In that case, I would need to direct the ezinearticle link or ppc link right to a single page containing only the relevant blog post. This blog post is then the landing page.

The problem is I'm not quite sure how to set up the domain and WP and the PPC or ezinearticle link to go just to that page. So another thought was to have a completely separate WP installation in a bunch of subdirectories, one subdir (and wp) per offer. Then I could use different themes for each WP and get some customization for split tests and so on. But then I wouldn't have a "review blog" with lots of reviews on the same topic, which as I understand is good for search engine rank and so on.

So I'm asking you pros: how should I set up my domain/WPs to have the best effect with articles and PPCs for multiple offers? One WP blog main page with lots of separate posts for each offer? One WP blog main page with links to separate standalone static pages (maybe not even WP pages), one page per offer? Separate WP installation with separate theme, one WP/theme per offer?

Thanks for reading, and of course thanks in advance for any insights you can offer.

Later,

Jay

The real work is in the planning....the other is just leg work.
Are your offers going to be in the same niche? If so you could make your main page a static page and then link to posts in your blog.
I wouldn't use multiple installations of WP as this would be a waste of space and time.
Rather I would create categories and post the information, articles, and offers for each in it's own category.
But without knowing your niche or what you specifically have in mind it is hard to say.

      Hi,

You're right about the planning; in fact I'm kind of in the planning stage right now, which is why I posted. Here's an example of what I'm thinking: say I want to promote one dating site in particular, but I want to have other dating sites available as well. So my niche is dating, and all of the campaigns will be dating related. So the first page may show one big image highlighting the preferred dating site, but there will be four other big thumbnail images (with links to their posts) on the main page.

The question is, should I direct a PPC link or ezine article to the main page with all of the dating sites, or should I direct a PPC/ezine link to a special page that highlights only one offer? If I go to a page that only has one post about one offer, is there an easy way to direct to that page via a URL? (That is, can I set up a PPC to go to a special page on my blog and have that special page be my landing page? I think I can, but like I say I'm real new to all this.)

      Thanks,

      Jay

Hi Jay and welcome to the forum. You sound like you're off to a good start already.

I would configure one WordPress site at the root of your domain. This site would be your "root" site where you could have pages devoted to each of your products, relevant articles and product comparisons. This could also be where you host your blog, I'll leave it to you to decide if you want the blog to be your home page (i.e. http://yoursite.com) or on it's own page (i.e. http://yoursite.com/blog). WordPress lets you decide where to place the Blog page in the "Reading Settings" on the Administrator utility.

After doing this create subdirectories for all your products in the way you described in your original post. I wouldn't use WordPress installations in each one, a static HTML or PHP landing page is all that is required. These are your squeeze pages.

Once you have these done write articles etc and point them at your main site or blog (if you update the blog regularly you can make that the focus of your site) and try and drive traffic. Make suer you start a mailing list and place a sign-up form on the site. Offer a useful freebie, perhaps a product review or buyers guide that you wrote and saved as a PDF.

If you have money (or once you get some) experiment with PPC, using different squeeze pages to split test your results. As you indicated you are representing several products you may want to limit your PPC efforts to one at a time, split testing takes a lot of hands-on work and can be confusing - it can also be expensive if you aren't careful!

That's just the way I'd do it in your situation, no doubt others will post theiir strateges which may be completely different. But that's the beauty of this forum - you can entertain all of the answers and from them craft a plan that works best for you, your situation and your technical and marketing abilities.

Best of luck with your efforts.

      Hi Beau,

Thanks, thats an interesting idea that would allow split testing of different WP themes as well. I'm amazed at all the different themes out there and at all the different ways to customize them, with or without plugins. Right now I've sort of settled on WP "pages" for single offer landing pages, and then posts in categories for the main page.

Later on I'm looking forward to experimenting with lots of different WP themes on different subdomains or domains.
