I am looking for someone who can teach me web design over the internet. I would like to learn the basics and go on to specialize in a certain type of web design, probably flash. I want to learn how to design sites from scratch. I know a bit about wordpress site design, but even that I need to be educated in.

I am willing to pay, but I am unsure what is a reasonable rate. I am also looking for alternatives to one-on-one teaching, such as an online class. I just want to make sure that I "get it."

thanks!

If any of you want to use my services (for wordpress) then you can get to my site from my signature file below.. I am told I have a good and easy way of teaching (you can see other WF members testimonials on that site) and as it says in the sig you get 20% on my prices as Warrior Members.

I use Skype Chat, Image tutorial (and video) and walk you through things as you learn them and later send you instructional copy/images/video which was based around the lesson you just did, if that is needed, so it is personal to you and what you want to achieve.

        Cheers

Motion seconded... All the way, baby!

That's how I learned, and I can do some pretty amazing things with websites. The most impressive (in my opinion) is being able to sift through thousands of lines of script and "fix" it- usually something stupid, like I hit the "." button instead of ";"

Eh... it happens  But then again, aren't we all still learning?

My best online tutor was YouTube. Give it a try, you'll definitely learn the basics there, and if nothing else, it can help supplement what you've learned via books, etc by providing great visuals you can follow.

I think private coaching through the internet is rather difficult.

Since you are willing to pay, why not buy some dvd tutorials like for example : Lynda.com

Or if you are willing to spend some time to learn it all by yourself just like many of us did, it will be even better.

Go and join stumbleupon.com , you might be able to dig up some cool and awesome sites with fantastic tutorials without a fee.

Trial and error is the key for all designers starting up, learn and improvise is the final piece of the puzzle.

    Cheers!

You have made some great suggestions here for people to learn as have others in this thread too, however, I do wonder what makes you think that private tuition through the internet is rather difficult?

I have a few clients now who have been really pleased with the way I conduct my tuition which is via the internet.

Have you tried this yourself perhaps? I would be interested to hear your experience.

      Cheers

        Hi Sue,

Actually I've been there, done that.. Bad experience for me.. I found myself a private coach for myself back then.

Either this former coach of mine is someone who doesn't make effort in delivering or I was too dumb to adsorb back then.

But come to think about it, you do have a point there while I still believe it's difficult but not impossible.

Maybe I'm a dvd person, that makes me learn my stuff from dvd and online tutorials easily.

        Cheers!

Well thanks for letting me know Amelia and I do think everyone learns in different ways and we should all stick to the way in which we learn the best.

With your previous experience perhaps it was just that your two styles did not mix well.. I know one of my clients said he had not been able to learn all that well in the past but found the way I did it just fit in with him so well and he then founds things easy.

Also want to make it clear that what I do is not a "Mentor" kind of thing it is one to one tuition on whatever the student needs that I can cover of course.

          Cheers

Did they use a solid desktop sharing application? With a phone and A good desktop sharing application Tutoring over the Internet is EASY.

I've helped trained a few people but my take on it is that most people do not need a tutor for the whole process. the Internet is filled with resources but thats not necessarily good. Newbies need to know where to start, what tools to use as they learn and the answer to a few questions here and there.

One half an hour session and you can learn the basics of Css Layout, tools to make adjusting CSS easy and direction where to look when you have questions or want to learn more from the best and easiest sources.

Flash a little longer, Now don't get the idea I am saying you are going to become an expert in that time. Far from it. You merely get an introduction in that kind of time but a good introduction is like a bklueprint showing you the way forward.

If you are mentally lazy and just want to ask someone the answer to everything without using the resources online even if they simple and throrough then you'd rack up hundreds or thousands in training fees.

I agree with you Mike, good tutoring should lead someone in the right direction and you then find they ask less and less as they see how to figure things out for themselves, both Jim and Laurence above don't need my services so much any more and that is great, they know where I am if they need me.

By the way, thanks Jim and Laurence for your posts as well

            Cheers

    Hi there,

I think alot of it is down to how the individual learns best.

What I find is that with dvds or tutorials, there is no way to ask a question or double check you have things right.

The problem for me with just experimenting was, when you really have little or no knowlege of what you are doing, you can make some mistakes that will cost you much more in the long run, ie- leaving your sites insecure, and with wordpress for example if you do not know what you are doing it is very easy to put your site in a position where it was not crawled by the search engines etc.

For me online tutoring did work and I think that is very much down to the person teaching.

Incidentally it was Sue that taught me, and no I am not on her payroll but she is really good! Got me form literally knowing nothing to getting a good first site up and running!

If you have someone with patience, who actually likes teaching and doesn't just do it for the money then it really is a good way to get started.

Plus with a tutor they can actually watch what your doing through your site and make sure you are doing things right.

Also you can ask as many questions as you need!!!!!

      Hi,
I`ve actually used the lady above `SusanneUK` and really found it easy i cannot see how using DVD`s could be as good as having an live mentor at your side.
Yeah sure i could of got all the answers myself with trial and error but how long would that take ? and theres no way i could find the answers i needed from DVDs so i`m really happy using online tutors.

I'm in need of some AS3, Flex, and Air tutoring. If you interested please contact me asap with arrangements and price per hour.

I've been working in Flash AS1 for about 10 yrs now, self-taught and I'm having a hard time getting my head around custom classes and some of the syntax in AS3.

Basically I'm in a pickle with a desktop application that I'm building that needs to be published as a desktop AIR application where I can browse the computer and open other SWF files within the main SWF-AIR file using Flex.

Please me contact me if you are interested.

Unfortunately I now longer have flash. It was the thing I was best at.. and now, I don't have it . But, I do use photoshop and am not BAD. If anyone wants help, just ask me!

I can create mini sites for you to look at (I'll send the PSD file) and you can learn from the file =].

Seeing as I'd be doing it for free, and I'm busy enough with my little web design 'job', you can't expect me to be at your beck and call 24/7. I do like to help others though =].

So feel free to PM me with any questions, or whatever.

    Cheers,

    -Aidan.
