Gimp is the best alternative to photoshop and it's free. I believe both of those programs work with bitmap (raster) images - images that are made up of pixels. Inkscape is like Corel Draw in that you can create vector images which have smoother lines (not made up of pixels). Inkscape is also free.

I have both programs, but I find myself using Gimp for most things.

As an experienced, full-time graphic designer, I can assure you that GIMP is the best free alternative to Photoshop. It's powerful and surprisingly capable, yet it's fairly simple to learn and newcomer-friendly.

I think it is best to just bite the bullet and get photoshop. I would not recommend learning a inferior program. Later on if your business grows your going to want to know how to use photoshop, if you have spent your time learning something else and then decide it's time for photoshop, you will now have to spend your time learning again.
