Working Out Background Sizes

I'm just in the process of putting together a minisite... the actual width of the sales letter graphics itself is 900 pixels. I made a square image with the logo which I wanted as a repeating background down each side of the main sales letter... I'm sure you'll have seen what I mean in many other places.

Anyway.. it looked great on my computer but when I uploaded it and checked it on a different sized screen the sales letter covered a small amount of the left hand logo and had too much space on the right hand side...

How can you balance this and make it fit ALL screen sizes??

Many thanks,
Marc

This sounds to me like a problem with margins in your CSS. Did you have the same issue with different browsers?

    You can't.

If you create a page that is 900 pixels wide, and I view it at 800x600 resolution, I'm going to have to scroll to the right to see the whole thing, NO MATTER WHAT THE PHYSICAL DIMENSIONS OF MY SCREEN HAPPEN TO BE. Even if it was displayed on the giant scoreboard in the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium. Screen size is irrelevant. Resolution is what you need to concern yourself with.

The best you can do is design your page to fit the resolution used by the majority of your site's visitors.

Tests have shown it's best to use a width of no more than 600. This way your site will look good regardless of the visitor's screen resolution or used browser.
