Ethics of website transfers
But what about when a client wants to move on but requests you additional time and expertise to make that happen?
I have been recently requested to help school a "developer" (actually he's a marketing person who is disproving his technical expertise through this process) who is asking for specific time and expertise on mail transfers, redirects, etc. often which is the wrong way to do it; plus I'm not apt to expend my time on helping him accomplish what should be a basic task. Provide logins etc., yes, step them through or do the transfer, not so much.
That also begs the question of how much I should open up, I do a lot of very specific configurations for speed and security which I do consider proprietary at this point. And much like the transfer questions, I am being asked to open up all the information on this so the new web person can scrape it an use it.
It makes me ponder the ethics of website transfers and where is the line for your professional responsiblity, especially if the client has not reached out to you to inform you of the transfer.
