I've have had trouble with my site dropping in rankings for over a year. I'm looking for the issue. One thing that did happen around the time when the problem started was I switched from http to https. Anyone know a good test to make sure the redirects are configured correctly?

    Try to enter few pages on your site with http:// instead of https:// and if you are redirected to the https:// it's probably done correctly.

    Check, that your certificate is installed properly: key file, crt file, and chain.
    Your can check it with online tools, just google "ssl certifficate check online".

    Check in your Google search console for errors. Google is constantly changing their algo. There could be a number of reasons that your website has dropped. Best thing is to run a complete scan on your site for errors, speed, mobile responsiveness, content quality, on-site SEO, backlink audit, etc.. In the last few months, Google has released a couple of big changes really favoring speed, content quality, and mobile first rankings.

    First, make a proper redirection (301). If you have a WordPress website, many plugins are out there. Further, there are many websites or tools available to check redirections, Google it. Now, lets have a talk about your ranking. It's not true adding https is reason of your ranking drop. It's really a myth. There are numerous aspects that you might be missing while migrating to https. Here I share a checklist, just check it now-
    1. Firstly, you need to verify your HTTPs website in Google and Bing webmasters tools.
    2. Implement the SEO friendly '301 Redirection'
    3. Once the website is upgraded to the HTTPS version, you need to update all the main internal and external links.
    4. Update all links on Social Media Platforms.
    5. Configure a new sitemap with HTTPS links.
    6. Update your Robots.txt file and resubmit to webmasters tools as well.
    7. Configure canonical tags and make them point to the HTTPs version.
    8. If you also work with Adwords, please update PPC landing pages with HTTPS version.
    9. Better to keep both version in Google webmasters tool or keep backup of Google Webmasters tools for future comparison and analysis.
    10. Also update your Google Analytics Setting.
    11. If you have a newsletter, please redesign or update links in newsletters with HTTPS URLS.
    12. Check images, CSS, javascripts URLs
    13. If you are using any plugins or extension, make sure that they are working with HTTPs URLs.
    14. Evaluate the Mobile version as well.
    15. Check out your website and page speed.
    16. Update your blog links.

    Check for errors in your Google console. Also check that all internal links on your site are using the https version.


    I've switched to https several times without ranking drops, so it shouldn't be that.

    Ranking drop because of enabling https is a myth. It may happen that your some content still remains on the HTTP page. So migration from HTTP to HTTPs is properly implemented or not as well as to see is there any content or webpage is remain on HTTP then you should follow this resource based on check mixed content warning.

    You need to do a server-side 301 redirect. This is the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to the correct page. The 301 status code means that a page has permanently moved to a new location. Use the Change of address tool in the Search Console. A change of address notification helps you manage the transition needed by Google to index your new URLs at the new address while minimizing impact to your current ranking in Google Search results.
