Is it always clear to you what needs to be done when designers give you layouts? If the designers do something wrong, what are these wrongs and what do you wish they have done better?

The designer cannot (and may not) do "something totally wrong" unless the totally wrong designer, which is easier to understand at the very beginning. Making a product (a website or whatever) is always a joint effort if properly managed. I saw stupid designs, out-of-key designs, but never it was that impossible to program. Better tell us what happened? Let's see what is wrong ;-))

    These answers are comical....

I / we do both at my firm... but there are occasions we have to work with a designer. What gets complicated is they are more concerned with color and texture and flow... that they are clueless with things like "Flow" meaning navigation. Or simple "Golden Rules" in my book like text on white backgrounds... or they are after some funky "intuitive" user interface that looks cool but you just KNOW will be an epic fail.

There is probably a not so fine line ( meaning its a fat line ) between being cutting edge and it ultimately doing what it is supposed to - usually meaning translating users to dollars. I cant say over the years I have not learned a thing or 2 from "designers" but more often than not we are "stepping in" at some point ( after the concept has gone live ) to get back to the basic rules of design to get the client inline with their goals.
