Hey yall. I remember when I was in high school, we were taught to create websites on a program on our computers like powerpoint or something. Does anyone know what this program is/was or if there is a better one that you can build your own site for free or low cost? Any help would be great!

You might also want to try WYSIWYG Web Builder 6.5

It's a very easy website builder, has a fair number of templates, and makes it simple to embed video, ect. You do have to pay ~$40 if you want to use it past the 30 day trial, but you can do a lot in 30 days. Being a stand alone program, you could then use any hosting company you want.

    Why pay...?
    Try this 4 free:
KompoZer Portable & Nvu Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives

Nvu is an easy-to-use web editor similar to Microsoft Frontpage or Dreamweaver. It is based on the same Gecko engine that powers Firefox and Thunderbird and features an FTP site manager, color picker, tabbed interface, CSS editing, standard-compliant markup, fully customizable interface, a built-in spellchecker and more.

If you're a newcomer, it makes sense to start using first free web site builder software, so you can learn more first without spending money. There're many good or enough good free web site editor/builder software. For instance:
    - Coffee Cup Free HTML Editor
    - Trellian WebPage
    - SeaMonkey
    - KompoZer

Some are free but more difficult to approach for newcomers like:
    - NetObjects Fusion Essentials - Komodo Edit
    - Aptana Studio
    - NetBeans
    - HTML-Kit
    - Eclipse
    - Alleycode
    - Amaya

    Many others that are free.

For my part, as a technologist and more advanced user, I'm using Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 that is the best HTML editor. It's advanced but can be also used by newcomers. It is the most popular HTML editor software among the professional web page designer. But it comes with a higher cost, about 400 USD.

Finally, I must admit that in the beginning I was doing all new web site from scratch and used to develop them using Abobe Dreamweaver. But since a while, I don't even use anymore Dreamweaver and I prefer to go for a quicker and easier way to build and deploy web site.

My new way is to install WordPress (free, famous and open-source) then I just use my own developed piece of software (free and open-source too) that runs on top of WordPress. I called it AdFlex.

AdFlex is a free, advanced, fully customizable, SEO ready, AdSense ready and Widget ready WordPress theme. It's is flexible and customizable. It comes out-of-the-box with an exhaustive list of more than 200 customization parameters that can be graphically managed using the WordPress Dashboard. You can modify most of the layout items of the theme without touching a single line of code.

AdFlex is currently used by about 1000 users and about 300,000 web pages are running WordPress + AdFlex.

You can find more info about AdFlex, by just doing a Google search on "adflex wordpress theme" and take the link to VK Labs' web site.

Anyway, don't take the last part of the post as a way for me to advertise my creation because I have nothing to sell because it's free.I just think it can help some people to know other free ways to build quickly and easily web sites. It's also my own way to contribute to the Internet community.

    I hope it helps.

    All the best!

What kind of a website would this be?
Brochure-ware type of site with several pages of information; a site where there would be members and interaction (forums, blogs etc.); a site that you would sell from...

There are differing solutions for all these, and aside from the first do consider the time in training yourself to use available products as a COST as well.

On the other hand, if you have time at your hands and are going to be building many more sites later, and again possibly without an outsourcing budget, self-training may be a good investment. You or one of your partners -if any- may choose to dedicate time to this part of your business.

    Good luck with your project!

    Wordpress for blogs....

but for making your own static sites, I highly reccomend DreamWeaver.... (save a few bucks and get an older version and you will be happier IMO)

I still remember using Homesite... was decent software back in the day.

I am considering buying XSitePro, as well as SEO Elite, which is another piece of fantastic software, and for another thread of discussion..

However, I have noticed that while XSitePro is extremely "feature rich" some sites that I have seen produced with the program are, well, kind of "search engine spammy looking." Very generic, and you can tell that they are built for affiliate and adsense income..
