Wordpress Theme Editor Not Working?

I set up a new blog before and the "update file" button in the theme editor isn't working.

If I change something and then click "update file" it re-directs to my home page without changing anything.

I also tried it by just opening a file and not changing anything and it also gave me the same result.

Have any of you ever seen this happen and/or know how to fix it?

Thanks.

    Hi Pat

Does the Themes directory on your server have the permissions set correctly? You need to have write permissions to modify the files.

A couple of links that may help:

    Changing File Permissions WordPress Codex

    Hope this helps.

      Hey Bill,

Thanks for the links. They do have the right permissions.

They are main files from the theme. I can't even edit the header.php file!

I have just installed this same theme on two other blogs before this one today and they were fine.

I just double checked the header.php file and it has 644 permissions so I should be able to edit it.

Any other ideas what could be causing this?

    Hi Pat

That is bizarre. I have a couple of suggestions:

1 - Odd as it may sound, try using a different web browser. I had an odd occurrence with a Joomla component in which it couldn't be edited in FireFox but worked in Chrome. Not sure why, but switching browsers did the trick.

2- If all else fails you could FTP the theme files to your local computer and edit them with your favorite text editor. I do that a lot anyway as I find the WordPress editor to be about as crude as Notepad. I use PS Pad, Notepad++ is another popular choice.

3 - This is really dangerous and I don't really recommend it, but you could try temporary changing permissions to 777 and see if that makes a difference. Of course you should reset the permissions after making your edits.

Please let me know how it turns out, if I think of anything else I will be sure to let you know.

It doesn't work in both Chrome and Firefox for this particular blog. Restarting my computer didn't help, either.

I downloaded the two files made the changes and re-uploaded them so it's now all good.

      Still pretty weird, though!

      Thanks for your help, Bill.

        Hi Pat,

It looks like your problem is solved but here's something to consider:

If you recently upgraded your WordPress core files to the 2.9 or 2.9.1 versions, lots and lots of people were having these unusual glitches. More often than not the problems were caused by either incompatible plugins or some of the core files did not update properly for some reason.

If it happens again here's what I would do:
        1) Go and download the version that you have of WordPress to your computer. Re-upload the complete wp-admin folder, then test to see if that solved your problem. If so, great, then no need to go further. If not try option 2.
        2) De-activate all plugins and then re-activate them one by one and keep testing the "update" button to see if it's working properly.

          Hey Karen,

That does make sense. I've noticed a few other small glitches every now and again.

I've been having one of those days where I had so much to do but every little thing I did went wrong somewhere so I don't think I have the patience to try and re-upload everything at the moment.

I will keep that in mind for a time when I don't feel like pulling my hair out! haha.

          Thanks.

I have the EXACT same problem here, and I found the fix! At least, it worked for me. It was the plugin Wordpress Firewall that caused this problem. I tried disabling my plugins one by one, and this was the culprit! Hope this helps anyone else who has this issue!

Edit: Actually Karen Blundell suggested this fix first.
