Wordpress Question

Okay; this may seem like a really stupid question but I'm a complete newbie. Is there a way to "work on" (i.e., put content in and get the feel of) Wordpress without going public? I would like to put WP on my server soon because I've outsourced a few people to set it up and install a membership script. But I don't want to leave it lingering while I try to get around in it and add content.

Is there a way to find my way around WP and add content, to "publish" when I'm ready to go live? I'm immersing myself in some WP tutorials and books ... just thought I'd ask a quick question from those in the know.

    You can block search engines from finding your blog until you are ready. In your wp-admin go to the privacy settings and change it so that search engines won't crawl your blog.

      The default setting of Wordpress is now private so you have to change it from the default setting so that the search engines can find you

    Catherine,

    Not anymore. the last few wordpress blogs I installed were version 2.9.2 (the latest version) and it was changed back to the original default. Your blog is open to anyone unless you change it.

    I do much WP development and constantly do this.

    You install WP in a sub-folder, it should never be installed in the root
    anyway, for security reasons, and you put a blank index.html page in
    your site's root.

    Once your site is ready to publish you then just move 2 files from WP folder
    to the root, make a few very easy changes in these files and there you go
    ready to show the world.

    it's the absolute best way to go.

    correct me if I am wrong, but I think a lot of people here misunderstood the question.

    What you want is a maintenance mode plugin. Standard visitors get to see the splash page saying the site is not available, or coming soon or something. You, as the logged in admin, get to see the whole shebang.

      Ok, allow me to correct you because indeed you're wrong! I believe you
      misunderstood the question, and the point. We're not talking about
      maintenance here, but developement

      While developping one want to be able to see the entire site and functions
      as visitors would. Not just getting access to admin area.

      Therefore, the method I explain above is by far the best for this situation.

      That goes without saying that the maintenance plugin is a very good
      solution, for maintenance situations of course.

    Actually, you're all right. What I'm looking for is a means to an end. Temporarily blocking search engines can work but as I don't even have my hosting yet (only the domain name), Toshihiro's response is exactly what I was looking for. Should someone look for or stumble upon my domain by chance, they would get a page saying Coming soon... (or the like).

    Once I get the WP experience and feel comfortable putting in content, I can certainly use NetMan's recommendation. But it will be awhile before I get there.

      I would suggest installing XAMPP (www.ApacheFriends.org)on your PC, and run it local. That way, you can test everything you want and never have to worry about visitors or search engines reading the blog..

      If anyones interested, I'll put to gether some screenshots and walk you throuhg the process..

    WordPress › underConstruction WordPress Plugins Works well for a splash page too. You activate it and it gives a coming soon message while you on the backend get to see the whole site as you create it.

    You don't even have to use the coming soon message, you can enter an html template into the plugin's config area and still give your visitors content (or a squeeze page) when they land on your site.
