I would like to delete an old URL that we used to own (haven't for 3-4 yrs) and replace with our new one. This old URL comes up when someone does a search, and, since there is no website for it, it misdirects new business. HELP.

Maybe you can do some 301 Redirect from .htaccess

was wondering if it would be possible for you guys to add some sort of redirect functionality to shopify? We have decided to add another manufacturer to our site and would like to move around/replace some collections, products and pages but don't want our customers to get an error page after doing so. Also all of the search engines have indexed these pages, products and collections and we do get quite a bit of traffic coming into our site from them. I was thinking something along the lines of this as an example. In theme.liquid

    Samantha,

If I understand your question correctly you want to redirect a domain name you don't own to one that you do own.

If that is the case then you can't. You no longer own the old domain name. You do not have any control over that domain at all.

However, if you do own the old domain name and just don't use it you have a couple of options.

    • If you domain registrar gives you the ability to do a 301 redirect of your old domain you should do it that way.
    • If not, then you should do a 301 redirect via .htacces file on your old site.
You want to do a 301 redirect because the SE Spiders recognize that you have permanently changed from your old site to your new site. The first time they come to spider your old site they will follow the redirection to your new site and spider it. Eventually you will see that you receive credit for the incoming links to your old site on your new site. So your new site's PR will be upgraded to the PR of your old site. And usually sooner than later the SEs will replace your old sites listings on their pages to your new sites URLs.

    Good Luck,
    Gene
