        yup, definitely this one
        reasons might be:
        - has cool auto colors for tags
        - marks the lines not yet saved
        - has tags suggestions
        - you can "bookmark" lines
        - you can have many tabes with documents, and also compare them
        - is goos for both noobs & experts (has features i never knew about while also being able to keep is quite simple)

meh, whatever, just go for it

NVU or Kompozer are both free, and are wysiwyg editors (think they are the same platform or something), but they do a pretty good job.

I have also heard of people using the editor within wordpress to build what they want, then copy/paste the html into something else.

I prefer PSPad, but it is a pure text-editor, not WYSIWYG, so you'll need to know your code to use it.

SeaMonkey is my favorite by far. It is developed by Mozilla, the people behind Firefox. It has a WYSIWYG w/ visual mode, Text-only mode, a "Normal mode" that shows the graphics and all the separately coded sections, and finally a "Tags mode" that shows exactly where all the sections of Tables, etc. are.

Additionally, I've used Komposer and Nvu, and it trounces those. It gets regular updates, and it doesn't have as many issues. Plus, it doesn't have the annoying issues of Komposer/Nvu of saving as .xhtml.

Notepad+ is also a good one, though if I remember, it's strictly text, so you can't see the finished project before publishing it.

    Hope this Helps.

Another vote for Seamonkey. I do find it frustrating at times,
like any WYSIWYG editor will be.

I use notepad++ a lot too. Everyday really. It has a lot of
advanced features that make editing code more efficient,
though there is quite a lot to learn. It's really a programmer's
tool, imo. The drawback is you don't get to see what your
code looks like in a webpage unless you upload it. This
can be solved with XAMMP I suppose, if you're not online
      with a fast connection.

A lot of people like the Coffee Cup editor. I often use the
editor in XSitePro2, when I have it open. It works pretty
well but doesn't handle inline CSS the same as an editor
like Seamonkey, which is more standards-compliant.

      When I first started I used http://www.chami.com/html-kit/
but stopped when I discovered WYSIWYG editors. It is
pretty cool, actually. Maybe I'll try it again.

Nvu is good, as others here have stated. But in my opinion, Ewen Chia's MyFreeWebsiteBuilder is a slightly better version of it. Been using it now for nearly three years without incident. In addition, its build is based on the Nvu code, but with some tweeks that make it a bit more powerful. Also, it is WYSIWYG. If you're not into coding, this will save your bacon for you.

Then, there is also First Page. I've not tried it. But was impressed with the description on the download page. This is also a WYSIWYG.

Both of these are, like Nvu and Kompozer, free for the taking.

You should be in the habit of developing offline in a browser anyway, just good practice. It takes like 5 minutes to install a LAMP stack (like xampp) for scripting, and you can run it through a series of browsers before ever uploading to a live server. Ideally, you will be able to run your page in 3-4 browser during each phase of development, so you don't spend too much time on any one thing before realizing it doesn't work in IE, or some other equally annoying problem.

Use Selenium IDE to test the browsers ... exporting to perl/php/java etc and running your own Selenium RC server locally.

        'cause it's buggy and slow.

I do use it sometimes with PLR salesletters to change the links,
but that's about it. In most web-editing, I've found it not
to be trusted. It also sometimes strips out links in my experience,
with no rhyme or reason to it.

My vote for free / low cost HTML editor is Coffee Cup HTML editor. They also have a lovely CoffeeCup Visual Editor for more of the WSYIWYG effect.

I'm giving Kompzer a try as so many folks seem to use it. I"m not overly impressed.

For a serious site, Dreamweaver rocks. However, if you are just starting out, you'll want to learn all the HTML behind the WSYIWYG.

Remember in any program, you will need to tweak the coding. It's always best to start with the basics.

An HTML editor is a software application for creating web pages. Although the HTML markup of a web page can be written with any text editor, specialized HTML editors can offer convenience and added functionality. For example, many HTML editors work not only with HTML, but also with related technologies such as CSS, XML and JavaScript or ECMAScript. In some cases they also manage communication with remote web servers via FTP and WebDAV, and version management systems such as CVS or Subversion.

If you want wysiwyg, I had better luck with Trellian than Kompozer. Trellian allows for html and wysiwyg.

Hello everyone, thanks for all the great advice - question - I'm just learning to use WYSIWYG -

Why do the things i design on wysiwig ( tried using both coffee cup and kompozer) look correct on the editor, but when i upload the saved file, its all jumbled up on the web? soooo frustrating!

these are sites that have style sheets, i assume that's what's throwing it off, but - why? and how do you format stuff so that it looks correct on your Wysiwyg, AND on the internet? Anyone who can help me please I have an awesome minisite that i can't get up and running b/c i can't get the formatting right

    Thanks !
    David
p.s. should i try sea monkey? or eclipse? or should i pony up and buy xcite pro? or hire a wizard? i'm totally frustrated!
here' s the minisite i'm tryin to get finished...

    Hi,

The reason things look jumbled up, is that editors when they export your design to HTML code format it in different ways depending on how they were programmed. Thats the problem with free WYSIWYG editors.

The only way around this is to use a professional editor like Dreamweaver that complies to proper coding standards. And then even that can give you problems. And Dreamweaver is expensive.

For right now try opening your current site in an editor like HTMLKit and see if you can tweak it to get it to work. Its probably not the CSS but rendering of tables that could be causing you problems. HTML Kit will allow you create a site using HTML/CSS code and preview it as you will see it on your computer at the same time.

I would then say you should get yourself a basic book , The CSS AnthologyThe CSS Anthology and learn basic CSS and HTML. Then for future sites use a free editor like http://www.htmlkit.com/.

Or if you still want to create sites using WYSIWYG editors I would highly recommend www.artisteer.com. It can be used to create themes for wordpress and HTML based sites. I have used it many times myself and it works very well. No formatting problems.

    Cheers
