Is it better for images to be in a separate folder?

I've found, in the vast majority of websites, that images are usually placed in their own folder.

Is this necessary? I know they *can* be in the same folder as the html file that calls them, but is there a good idea that I'm missing why they should be segregated?

    It is not necessary. It is just a matter of organization and easiness for you to find the image. If you are going to have dozens of images and dozens of files, then its better for you to have the images inside a folder.

    Think about your PC which you have documents folder, music folder, videos folder; all done for you to get organized and find any document faster.

    It's good practice to have certain elements in seperate folders.

    Typically I work with the following:
    /css - for any stylesheets
    /js - for any Javascript
    /images - for any images

      Okay, I can accept good practice.

      But will it break if I don't? (I'm asking because my images aren't segregated; and I will, eventually, but not right now.)

    No, it won't break - but you'll find by seperating various files into their appropriate folders that your site becomes a lot easier to manage when you're looking through a list of files for that one HTML page you want to edit

    It definitely won't break but once your images start piling up you're going to regret not placing them in a separate folder to begin with. You could always move them over to a new folder in the future but the longer you wait, the harder it will be.

    There is a lot to be said for being organized. I was working on two web pages last night, and the new ones I created, I put the images in their own folder. It's only a few seconds additional work, and it does look nicer.

    Now to carve out the time to go back and re-organize the older few.

      Just a reminder: don't forget to check the path to your images in the HTML code! Moving them to a different location can easily break the referencing code which would make all your images "invisible"...

    Yes, it is just a better way to organize and put things together This helps to maintain the code and easy tracking of things, rather than putting everything mixed in a single folder.

    ...well i strongly suggest that you put all your files separated to index or main page of your site. if you want to be more productive in your site, you need to separate all of the file in the different folder. this is to prevent the disturbing of your code when you get in editing of your site. and most importantly, when you edit your site, you will surely guess what kind of object is this when you see it in your site code. truly the site code are lots of character that not easily to figure out unless you read it first.
