Domain? .info or .com

Does it really matter whether the domain name is .com, .org, .net? I did some research and hear both sides of the domain name issue but recently read a guru blog about how it is not a good idea to use .info -- but since most people going to my domains click on a link and don't type it in, does it really matter?

I personally think it doesn't make that much difference, because most people don't even remember the website's URL they visited 2 min. ago. And I don't believe that many people even look at the URL of the site they are just visiting if they followed a link.

But for SEO and getting your website ranked high in Google it does make any difference.

From my own testing I can say that it will be easier to get high Google rankings with a .com .net or .org domain than it will be with a .info domain. With a .info you need to work much more and build many more links to get good positions in Google.

These are just my 2 cents.

    I agree with dwaser,
If your traffic is not geared towards Google or branding but generally from referrals (clicking a link) then no one will notice much.
If you want to SEO the site then go .com. I've seen several .info sites disappear from Google after a month or so of being listed never to be heard from again.

The problem is that .info domains are very cheap and a lot of spam websites have popped up on .info domains, that's why .info domains lost credibility.

Thanks for the feedback. Good point Jonathan -- had not thought about it from that perspective of poor credibility. Dwaser and Ken, thanks... and since I need Google to notice the sites, I think I will stick with .com....

Another type of domain to avoid is .biz as they tend to suffer from spam like the .info sites.

I have a biz domain and have never used it -- it just came up for renewal and I was debating whether to keep it or not -- the decision has been made. .com it is.

I registered my own personal domain (joannereid (dot) ca) more than 10 years ago and was chagrined to discover that even then the .com version was taken so I have the .ca version. I'm Canadian so that is okay. It even has a pagerank (okay so it is only a PR1 site) although I have used it only as a personal site. Today I am revamping it -- right now it is blank as I deleted everything and am setting it up to focus on what I do -- social media marketing. I have other sites that I used over the years to sell my writing/technical services and they are okay. I think that since my basic online entity is a .ca, I have been aware of the meaning and impact of these extensions.

I rarely see .ca domains either so I may have to stick with the technical writer site for work and just keep this .ca onr for fun...
