I create wordpress sites using cpanel and shared hosting. When a new client has an existing site that they want to redo, I will create the new wordpress site on a test domain that I use. My question is this. What is the easiest way to do this? I have to create the site basically 2 times. Once on the test domain and then the new domain. I have tried 1 cloning program and it didn't work very good. I basically want to have the site ready before I switch the dns server info from the clients current site to the new site. Any ides?

Thanks

The best way I have ever done this is not to do it but get help. I call up Hosting Provider support and ask to make the transfer for me and it has turned out perfectly every single time. Hope this helps. Yours, Jae Smith

You can use a find and replace program to search for the temp domain name and replace with the new domain name is the exported database file. Then upload the modified database file to your database. Should do the trick.

    Hi Zack

If you can, ask your host like jaesmith suggested.

If not, you can try Austin's guide here - http://www.warriorforum.com/blogs/au...-installs.html

If you can invest a little then I'd strongly suggest looking into WP Twin.

    Hope that helps

It sounds easiest to ask my hosting company but how many times will they do it before asking me to learn how to do it mjyself. I know web designers create their designs all the time and put them in a terst environment to show their clients before actually making the final changes. Thanks for all your help.

    Hey Zack

Yeah, I do that too. I usually create the site in a test environment (ie in a folder/subdomain of one of my sites). When the client is happy, I transfer it to their hosting.

Now that I have WP Twin, it takes seconds to upload, including all widget settings etc. The only time is downloading the wptwin file, which is like a zipped file in a way, and then reuploading.

But, as mentioned, the link above to Austin's tutorial, that's the way I do it manually too. Have a look at WP Twin because even though there's a fee, it'll save you a lot of time, especially if you plan to create Wordpress sites on test domains in the future. Or, follow Austin's guide (if it helps) and once you've done it a few times, you'll get the hang of it and it'll become easier.

Another option is to simply download the xml file of the blog posts/pages, download the database from using the WP DB Backup plugin (or whatever it's called), maybe download the wp-content folder (ie theme, plugins, uploads folder, etc.) and you can install the blog that way but you'd have to go in and make sure all urls are resolving, reconfigure widget settings etc.

Someone may offer an easier alternative but those 3 methods are the best I can think of at the moment.

    Good luck either way

    Scott
