What you can do yourself without any special knowledge.
Optimizing Images (free tool for image editing - like Gimp).
    - Reduce the size in px (width and height),
    - reduce the resolution to 72px per inch,
    - reduce the quality of image (65-70% - if it comes to jpg).
Types of documents doc, xls etc can zipp.
They must first go download and unpack it would be open (on the client side).
Html pages and CSS, you can manually optimized.
Delete all whitespace between the lines and parts of the code.
That way you can reduce file sizes up to 50%.
For this part of the job you can use an ordinary notepad, and advanced, free notepad + +.

Optimize your file images by reducing their sizes and number of colors. Photoshop can handle this.

If you're using photoshop for images be sure to use Save to web.. and as you adjust settings appropriately you will be presented with how large the file will be.

Unless you're website is going to be very image heavy I don't think you will have any problems with the pages being too big really.

More importantly than suggested above, check out Yahoo's YSlow. It's an addon for Firefox that analyzes the things loading and running in the background of your site. These include CSS files, scripts, and other things that can slow your loading time down.

Check it out at Yahoo! YSlow for Firebug

infoman is right ..so in addition then ..
The most wasteful files are usually images. If they are jpg (j-peg) images and dont contain text - squish them down to 35 percent or small in most image programmes (photoshop, photoshop elements, gimp or any number of image compress websites- use Google to find one). Also make sure you MAKE the image the correct size for the job and dont leave it to resizing in Dreamweaver or your web page making application. If an image space is 100 x 30 pixels... make the image this size and dont resize it subsequently. If the image is mono (black and white or GRAYSCALE) use the GIF image format.

Flash files or swf files are compress-able, simply use the FLASH programme to OPTIMIZE the swf when publishing.

MPEGs and Movies are wasteful in bandwidth due to their large size, however they are already compressed internally. Use YouTube for video and a med compression format for your mp3 files.

Next javascript. Zap any scripts with a javascript compressor. An application or any number of websites on-line. Same goes for large HTML pages. I would only zap HTML when you are done coding as its difficult to read code when its squished.
Any commmercial AJAX style core files (.js files) come in compressed or small versions. Seek them out on the web.

If you are using a Wordpress ZIP then its likely the zip has been done already, however once its extracted at the other end (on the server), the files may again be wasteful, so its still worth compressing ALL graphics before uploading.

Graphic loading times used to be a fetish of coders in the old days, however with Broadband and fast ADSL DSL etc, image loading times are less sensitive, however its still worth keeping images small and tighly compressed as Google favours a fast loading website!

      Good luck.

I think you don't need to learn any graphic tool like Adobe Photoshop or any illustrator. Now there are lot more image optimization tools available online. Just need to google them.

I tried TinyPNG to reduce PNG file format. But I found more versatile online tool that supports all common image formats. There are two modes of this tool, either you can let tool find the best optimized quality of image for you and reduce the size upto best level or you can also adjust your own level of optimization to best fit your need.

    Try it Online Image Optimizer
