Hi guys I have a few websites and would prefer if my clients were able to easily change and update the content on their websites. I build all of my websites in Dreamweaver so would be great to have a CMS for updating content. Anyone help?

I presume you need suggestions on CMS...try Joomla, Mambo, WordPress, Drupal..and see with which one you feel more comfortable (tho, wordpress is super easy, but clients will then need to update to latest version every time there is a new one).

Thanks for the quick replay, I have build the website using dreamweaver so I don't believe I can use wordpress to update the pages in, I think Joomla is my best bet right now. Is it easy to edit my pages in Joomla?

It is not a problem to update the pages with either CMS, as long as you have the knowledge to create the "templates" of these CMS platforms. I believe it would be easier for you to theme a wordpress theme rather then a Joomla one.

Would be great if my clients could make the changes to their sites in Wordpress or Joomla. Are there tutorials for this? Alot of designers use dreamweaver to design websigns but what if their clients prefer to make the changes to the site themselves instead of paying a fee everytime. This is something that i want for my business. Thanks

Then, its best to stick with Wordpress for the simplicity of making changes on the fly, easily -even for your clients to make those changes. There is even a Automatic Updater Plugin that you get which will update Wordpress at the touch of a button. I find working with WP is less hassles.

Sounds great Teriss, but how do i actually integrate an existing website that i created in dreamweaver so that my clients can edit them in wordpress? Seems like alot of hassel having to create different accounts in wordpress for different websites. Can you please explain the best solution for this?

          Thanks

There are 100's of Open-source CMS's with an exciting array of features, benefits, and 'problems'. I recommend you spend a serious amount of time using the "famous" (and some lesser-known) options yourself, before getting paid to pass them on to clients.

    Short on time?

Being a fellow Dreamweaver fan I chose MODx CMS as it really is a no-brainer for transferring of CSS and XHTML into its templates (and Template Variables that give complete control over SEO and other stuff.)

I found Joomla too clunky, and well, WP is not for me with so many WP-evangelists around. Be different and do not follow the crowd.

Okay, honestly wordpress is not anywhere near the best of the CMS's.

When you have a group like Joomla, Drupal and wordpress.... think of it as gasoline and the different types. Wordpress is like unleaded gas, it is the basic, generic kind, but it works. You have drastic changes in quality.

I really don't mind when people have a site designed in wordpress. 50% of my business comes from people who are unhappy with wordpress and how limited it is. What cracks me up is how people charge someone thousands for a basic wordpress site, like they actually are a web developer or something special. In reality I can knock out a wordpress site in a couple hours, custom template and everything.

Go with joomla, it is very easy to update on the user end, and it is more professional. Great extensions are available, and really, it blows wordpress out of the water. Wordpress, truly isn't meant to be anything more than a blog.

Once you master Joomla and you learn a bit of programming, then it is time to go to drupal. Drupal is very robust when it comes to the big 3. You can make drupal do things that the others can't.

If you are wanting an ecommerce site, use magento. Very effective, VERY professional and probably the best solution out there.

NameLess is right on the money here.

Wordpress is a decent BLOGGING platform that has been modified as a faux CMS.

Joomla is a good cross between the simplistic Wordpress blogging platform and the robust Drupal platform.

Drupal (my CMS of choice) is excellent for building all types of websites (ever seen whitehouse.gov? it's a drupal site) from basic blogs to interactive social media sites.

      Follow Namless' recommendation here...

Wordpress is a favorite among this website because of it's ability to create quick spam sites. You can have a wordpress site up and running in minutes. Even better yet you can feel (a false sense of) warm(th) inside knowing you installed the latest canned SEO plugin. Wordpress is nice for basic sites, but for a business site you should look deeper into a scalable CMS.

program's web pages for many years I decided to gather some unorganized notes on this site. I've found that beginners start building their websites without a plan or a website does not have an exact idea of the website before you start to build your website.

You are very misguided and misinformed. That is not true at all. Honestly, the majority of those use a custom CMS. Wordpress is not involved whatsoever. Just because you find a site claiming those MEGA sites are wordpress sites, doesn't mean it is true. They are spending a million on web maintenance a year. You think they are using wordpress? No.

No, you are doing good using Joomla. You aren't considered a script kiddie, and if you decide to sell web design services, people will take you seriously instead of only paying $20 for a wordpress site.

Drupal is great, not as user friendly as joomla, but wordpress users would have a very large learning curve for this.

Wordpress is for blogs. That is what its intended use is for. Blogs, and spam sites. You just haven't been able to use the other ones I assume, either that or it is over your head.

Plain and simple(words to describe wordpress), The wordpress platform can not do THAT much. In fact, I will challenge ANY designer and developer out there, to make a wordpress site, more robust than I can make a drupal or joomla site. In fact, I have a major magazine that is making the switch from wordpress to joomla because they can't have things implemented on wordpress.

I can skin, customize, and make a wordpress blog, into a full site within an hour or two. I can knock out 10 wordpress sites a day, fully featured, skinned and everything.

Think of your website as back links. You don't want garbage back links. You want something professional. Something that earns the users trust. Thing is, every word press site, looks like a wordpress site. You can't get away from it. If you aren't setting up a blog, or a spam site, then don't use wordpress. Have a bit of originality.

I was in the same boat you are a year or two ago. I had been designing all my sites with Dreamweaver, but clients started asking to be able to modify the sites themselves. I started using Adobe's solution, but then it went from free to expensive. I tried to quickly learn Joomla, but got frustrated. Same with Mambo, but Wordpress seemed to work better for me.

One of the challenges you will find is that you will need to totally redo the sites to make them fit into to CMS of any kind. You can't just plug and play.

My suggestion would be to take the next client who would like to update their website and have access to make changes, design using Wordpress (you can still use Dreamweaver and Fireworks in some parts). It will take you a bit longer, but it will be worth the transition.

One other thing to consider is after you complete a WP site for your client you will have to train them on how to use it. This can take more time expected (at least it did for me and my clients).

Let us know how it works out for you!

Thanks alot guys for all of your comments, Sounds like WP is the way to go! All i gotta do now is learn how to move my current websites (built in dreamweaver) so that my clients can make the changes in WP. Might take a while to integrate into WP but i got nothing to lose.

I don't know what the specific relation you have with your clients is like; technically. I would suggest you look into the network/multi-user capabilities of WP. You have to edit some code just a little, but its pretty simple.

If you really want to use DW, and allow your clients to update themselves, then you need an Adobe product called Contribute.. Read about it here: web publishing software | Adobe Contribute CS5

I would agree with others... WordPress or Joomla are the best CMS products, depending on the type of site. Both allow your clients to update their sites without owning products like DW or Contribute. All they need to update is an Internet connection.

problem is i don't know alot of php (WP coding) so i'm assuming its going to be difficult to set this up and been able to to change the header, body and footer in WP. How do i make the transition from having the knowledge of working with html, css, and integrating it into a wordpress account. I'm quite a fast learner so are there video tutorials for this to show exactly how its done?

Also I want to have a link at the top of my site where my clients can login to manage/update there site etc. I have seen this on a lot of web designer sites and would like to have this feature. Please give us more information about this.

      Thanks

i have worked extensively on Joomla for many years and am pretty familiar right now with Wordpress templating.

My preference is Joomla templating over Wordpress hands down.

Styling is pretty straight forward using css - you just need to understand how to set your main header up and then how to place your main component and module positions which is super simple. Your talking understanding perhaps 4 lines of very simply code. Taking a regular HTML page layout and converting it to Joomla really takes no effort at all. Whereas with Wordpress you are creating several files to build the template.

However that said i think Wordpress has a very intuitive way of adding content its very clean and straightforward - unlike joomla i find the out of the box editor insufficient and always upgrade it everytime i start a new project. Once you get passed the initial learning curve of Joomla i feel it has a lot less limitations.

At the end of the day it really depends what you are trying to do and where you see your site going in the next 24months.

I like to use Joomla for pretty much everything as i feel it sits right in between Wordpress and Drupal - its not as simple as wordpress but for me i feel it has a better and more robust framework that will allow you to expand or develop the site at a later date, however i dont feel Joomla has got a strong a framework as Drupal but for the most part i think Drupal is overkill for a basic website. So to me Joomla is a nice go between.

At the end of the day try them all out and use what you feel most comfortable with.
