Neep To Partner With a Developer/Designer

I need to get a pretty high end site done for an idea I have. This has nothing to do with internet marketing. The site will require some functionality that goes above and beyond what I can do in WP or Joomla.

Here's the problem. I don't have the money to pay a programmer to build the site. So I'd like to partner with one instead. Is this something that a developer would be willing to do? What's typical split? I'm thinking something like 70/30 or 60/40, but I just don't know how this stuff works.

Anyway, hopefully that makes sense. I'm curious if anyone has done this sort of thing and how you went about finding the developer.

You're looking to have a developer build you a site that is too complex for wordpress or joomla, and then want to give them 30% - 40% of the profits?

The days of work now, get paid later (maybe) are pretty much gone. No developer that I know, myself included, would do that - especially on a project that sounds as time consuming as yours.

I'd recommend finding a developer to explain your idea to, then getting a quote and saving up. That way you can keep 100% of the money when your idea works out.

Good luck (and good luck to the Pack this weekend)!

I don't actually know if it's too complicated for Joomla really, but's way beyond what I can do. (Which isn't much).

I've got one developer friend that I can talk to, but he's a pretty busy dude, and I don't want to wait 3 years. Maybe it's not going to be that difficult, I don't know.

I have a hard time talking to strangers about the idea. Would need a NDA and such. I've never dealt with anything like this before.

      Go Pack!

Should point out that this is a long term project. Not some random product launch or anything like that.

Yep - that would make it even more difficult to get 'free' development. What you're saying is - I need a LOT of work from someone, and don't plan on getting paid anytime soon.

It would have to be an AMAZING - like multi-million dollar idea for someone to take that deal. Put yourself in their shoes.

If you want feedback on your idea, feel free to PM me the basics. I've worked on dozens of sites and signed plenty of NDA's, but would never disclose/steal an idea anyway. I've got way too many of my own ideas still sitting on the backburner!

Keep it that way! Trust no one! - I meant to say (here)... Trust no one that you haven't had some previous interaction with!

I believe you have an idea that's going to make you some money. Raise some capital and hire a professional at a site like http://www.eLance.com or http://www.vworker.com (previously rentacoder.com).

I'm not saying that there isn't someone here you can trust, I'm saying trust no one here! (What was I thinking? Another place I should have kept my mouth shut.)

I don't know what you want to do... Most (big) coding jobs can be completed for a few hundred dollars. Once you have what you need.. hire someone (from here) to maintain and modify... if it's something you don't feel comfortable talking about then don't get it done here.

Joomla has a large extension resource (http://extensions.joomla.org/). Are you sure there's nothing there that can be modified to fit your needs.

RIGHT! lol... I saw that and almost had an epileptic attack. That would be wonderful. Can outsource huge projects for a couple hundred. Even the cheapest in the Philippines won't do a few things for under a grand.

Well, to be honest, a long term project with no pay is not something anyone will be interested in. Think about it this way, 70% of businesses fail in the first year when it comes to web ideas, getting 40% profit on what has a 70% chance of failure is basically putting me out, of 110% money and time.

You have to look at it that way. Now, if there is 70% chance of failure, and 80% profit I would be able to take in, then yeah, maybe I would consider it if I had money saved up for a bit. Even then, I probably wouldn't go through with it.

I don't mean to be negative or try to discourage you. If there is a will, there is a way! To give you an idea, I have a project that is going to take about 6 or 7 months, and I'm on a $6,000 salary paid monthly for this, with bonuses and incentive. But, 1 month of my time, and getting 6,000... it secures my time for a month, if they don't pay the 2nd month, no work gets done, and I am not out of time and money.

If this is a business, you need to think of it that way. How will you be able to afford basic expenses if you can't afford to pay design fees?

I recommend either saving up, to ensure a better success rate, or making your idea work within your grasps of WP or joomla.
