How to Take a Wordpress Blog to the Next Level

Even with WordPress sites it is all about your keyword analysis. Once you have completed this part of your site building process the next step is to start implementing it using On-Page SEO.

Many people, including me, often recommend a plugin called All-In-One SEO. I have changed my preference to a plugin by WP expert, Joost de Valk, called WordPress SEO (WordPress SEO Plugin - Yoast).

Use Google Webmaster Tools (https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/home?hl=en) and the Google XML Sitemaps plugin (WordPress › Google XML Sitemaps « WordPress Plugins)

To attract readers show off your expertise in whatever subject your site is about. Keep a consistent schedule for updates. Invite people to follow you on Twitter or like your Facebook page. Offer RSS feeds and possibly a newsletter. Write for the people who will be visiting your blog and not search engines. Engage people by responding to their comments and requesting feedback. Do things to make the user feel like part of your site.

Finally, make sure you are using analytics (googleanalytics.com) and track what is going on with your site. Really learn how to read the data collected and adjust your site and articles accordingly.

So the bottom line:

1. Do proper keyword analysis
2. Use Google Webmaster tools and sitemaps
3. Differentiate your site and engage readers
4. Go social with Twitter and Facebook
5. Analyze and adjust with analytics
6. Write great, unique content
7. Don't get discouraged and stay at it.

Great tips. I'm also looking for some advance techniques that may not be so well known.

There may be some little known, advanced techniques but in the end they will most likely come full circle back around to basic SEO.

Work on master things like keyword research and backlinking and you won't need to worry about "advanced" methods. Plus, if you don't have the basics properly implemented any advanced technique you find probably won't help.

I suspect there are a number of methods specific to the wordpress platform, which stand firmly outside the casual use of SEO and wordpress they are not synonymous.

Tell you what PM me and I will set you up with some information that most people do not even realize you can do using wordpress and publication techniques.

Some important things to get right are:

1) permalinks
2) choice of categories
3) tagging strategy
4) on page SEO
5) internal linking strategy
6) choose a theme that support rich archive pages
7) offload static content to a CDN
