Mark Hess' Easy Cover Creator is a great and affordable software that you can use to create cool custom covers.

I use this and love it. I think it was like $10.

  But if you want some completes option of covers design... I suggest you to use CoverActionPro package. Its has many options for use to make different cover design
  Off course you need and know about using photoshop and action script

Hi edmercer,

It depends if you have Photoshop or GIMP and action scripts to render them as 3-D images. If you don't then there are ways you can easily make free or low-cost e-covers (depending on which style of cover you want).

  I actually made a cover today. Downloaded a book stock photo, created a 2d cover in photoshop, then used skew and distort to fit my 2d cover onto the book. Then burned the spine of the book to give shadows and depth.

  You always need artistic ability to design an ecover unless its designed for you or your using a pre-designed ecover.
  
  None of the generators design for you, the just take something that is flat and turn into something with dimensions, which is cool by itself, but the design part is always missing....

Do you want to make your service or product look credible and professional?

If so, I would not use a generic eCover generator. I have seen just about all of them, and not one of them produces a high quality eCover design, not one.

Now, it may be possible to generate something of high quality if and only if your a designer who has design skills, which kinda defeats the whole point in the first place.

So, my suggestion for you and anyone else that reads this, is to hire someone on the warrior forum who does this professionally to do it for you...

You'll find a whole variety of people on here some more experienced than others. I guess you should look at their portfolio and see if you like what they have done? Then choose accordingly. I've seen this service offered from as low as $10.00 up to $135.00 just for one eCover. And what I have seen as a pattern is that you get what you pay for.....

So, choose wisely....

The best software for ebooks covers design is Photoshop with Photoshop Action Scripts (3D Cover Actions). You can find these scripts on any torrent tracker or buy.

Its probably not the best thing to advise someone to download products from a torrent site, not only can it be stealing, but you can also end up with a very nasty computer virus....

My vote is for using Paint.net to design the front over and then using 3D-box maker » 3d-box & package on-line for free to turn it into a 3D cover - great free tools!

  Just like you said, photoshop is one of the greatest tool for creating images, covers etc.
  
  I use it to design the cover, and use the 3d addon to make the box for products.
  
  It is the most easy to use tool... Anyone can learn it, plus there are numerous tutorials on making covers and 3d boxes.

A good product and easy to use is REAL-DRAW PRO which is much more than an ebook cover creator, it is a graphics and ilustrations package for only $55. You can create 2D and 3D and is having even LIQUID VECTORS.
It is a good value for the money and you can create webpages with original graphics/ilustrations done by you in about one hour. Image what money you can make selling unique webpages.

I use my e cover maker dot com. 3.99 a cover/ 9.99 mo/ The 9.99 gets you unlimited covers for you or sell to clients. A great platform and easy to use. Makes great covers. Glad I found and worth it. Go try out the demo. You'll be hooked!

Don't buy an "eBook cover generator" it's just another waste of money. Outsource it on DP or Fiver for under $10 or just simply learn how to use Gimp and/or Photoshop. Making your OWN cover in Gimp/Photoshop is your best way to go.

You can take a day off and learn Photoshop/Gimp and never need to pay again to have a cover made, life long skill. Take it or leave it!

I know there "actions" you can buy for Photoshop, too. Quite expensive but the look is professional: 3D, shades, DVDs, Books, mirror reflections etc...I can't remember the name of the product but you can google "photoshop cover ebook creator" or similar things

  PhotoShop action scripts like in the Cover Action Pro package are the best way to create your ebook an report covers.
  
  But if you plan on designing a Kindle ebook cover, you can create a cover in 2D, as a flat image, so there's no need to design a 3D cover for a Kindle Ebook.
