The advantage of a CMS is that it gives you a consistent look, feel and layout throughout the entire website, coupled with a user-friendly interface. With the Administrative backend, non-developers can maintain website content.

You don't need to know php or javascript to use wordpress. Considering you've already been doing some html I guess you must know some css aswell.

The web is moving in the direction of the Content management systems (CMS). As an independent developer, I'll suggest you consider using a CMS.

Give it a try. You will not regret.

    Enjoy!

I use WordPress for every site I build now - my own or for a client - simply because it reduces the amount of time it requires.

Essentially, all the grunt work is done. All I need to do is focus on the front end styling and building in the functionality required.

It's a hugely more cost-efficient way of building sites.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I have been doing sites since 1996. As far as I'm concerned HTML sites are history. There is just no contest--they are expensive to create and maintain and they offer no long term benefit. Modular CMS sites like WordPress and Joomla can be updated easily and you can give them a total periodic make-over with little effort or expense.

CMS sites do contain HTML, but it is their modular construction that makes them so valuable.

There are diehards who say that HTML sites rank better in SEO. That might have been true in the past but is no longer true. Sites built totally in HTML are receding into history--they will be remembered as a building block of Web 1.0.

Wordpress is the best I think. Now people are even adding special features into these websites using frameworks. Any function that I know of can be added as part of the code to the site.

If you do not want to have to go to this trouble you can still use outside scripts and link to them with wordpress and they will seem like part of the site.

I am building my first Wordpress site, right now. But, I did purchase Adobe CS5, just last week. I want to learn both fronts, and essentially have as much creative freedom as possible. I know that everyone has a place they call home, and many are very loyal to one or another. But I honestly think that every design program has a powerful piece that others may not address fully, or as well.

I don't think there are any cons whatsoever.

The pros have already been mentioned: content magagement, loads of themes, themes are easy to customize, loads of fantastic plugins. And the list goes on.

To see what I mean with easy customization, check out my website (signature): it's based on the free, yet awesome Arras Theme. The theme itself is great, but the community around it is even greater if you need help tweaking the look of things.

Just give Wordpress a go, you'll be very pleased. If you want something a bit harder, try out the recently released Drupal 7.

I use a ton of custom HTML, CSS, and PHP in WordPress sites for me and for clients. Knowing the languages just helps you use WordPress to its full potential. The addition of frameworks makes it even easier to get into advanced concepts without fully understanding the code. Once you can modify the PHP consistently, you still want to use WordPress for the security. It is unlikely that you will completely secure a site down when you are using a custom CMS or your own PHP. Let WordPress help you until you completely understand the dynamics.
