Anyone Know How to Shrink avi files?

I am writing an online ebook that will include videos, but I'm having a hard time hosting the videos. The are starting about between 75-175 MB so they are too big for practical use.

Anyway, I've been using Windows Movie Maker to shrink down the size and save them as WMV files, but once uploaded to my server they don't work. It appears that they are encrypted or something because they work in Foxfire, but not Explorer.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to host larger videos? I have a dedicated server already, but I'm wondering how I can make this as simple as possible.

Any help is appreciated.

PS- I don't really know any programming, so the simpler the solution the better.

Try converting them to mpeg, should be smaller in size. Windows movie maker has this option i think. Have not used it lately as i use camtasia for IM

first..this is my first post so hello to every1.
you could try to make your videos into a swf movie...i've made some like this and they have pretty good quality and they are not big in size. just search on google for free swf creating/converting programs...there should be a few.

        Guy,

Thanks for the advice and link. It worked like a charm! Your link to the 'tutorial' was easy and totally works to get rid of my mystery formating problem.

This is my first post, so hello everyone.
I am a web designer by trade, but also like to help people out.

If you want to convert and AVI file to a flash file for your website and give a really nice appearance, you can get a tool like that from my website. (It's not free, but it's reasonably priced). VideoWebWizard 2.0 | Put Video On Your Website | Add Video To Your Web Page

I use it all the time, and simply LOVE it. I have been a web designer for a long time.

I also took an online class on web video creation, and really really liked that, too...which is the other link in the trackbacks section. Once you see the advance effects you learn to create, you will be glad you at least check the course out. It teaches you how to do WAY more things than windows movie maker could EVER do.

Well, good luck with your video. Hope the tool works well for you.
