I have an idea for a website (social networking niche) and from talking to people it seems like it requires about $20,000 to design and develop. Before I go ahead with it, I would like to consult with someone who can give me some direction and also give me their opinion. Any recommendations about a consultant?

Wowzers! $20,000 sounds a seriously hefty development project.

I would recommend thinking about breaking something like that into phases. You must have a lot of features on your wish list, but if you focus on the essentials you could launch the site earlier, and cheaper.

It would be worth your while to read the book "Getting Real". Getting Real: The Book by 37signals

It might change your mindset towards making it a "work in progress"... starting with the core and building outwards based on real world feedback and testing.

Neither Twitter or Facebook began life as a $20,000 dollar project

I'm a get-my-hands-dirty PHP developer, and not a business-suit consultant, but I'd be happy to lend advice where I can.
