Inserting text into index.php

Dear all

I am using a wordpress review theme that takes the latest posts and a thumbnail for the homepage of the site.

Whilst I like the look of the homepage, I am conscious that I am not getting the SEO benefits of having an article optimised for my main keyword ie. H1,2 and 3 tags etc.

Is it possible to insert such text in the index.php file?

Sorry a noob when comes to wordpress.

Many thanks

Nigel

You can do it that way! For SEO there's no issues if you're using just one H1 tag per page, and as many H2-H5 for sub-titles you want. You can use a keyword research tool to find long tailed keywords for optimizing your articles, a 3 word keyword seems to work best. Also, you should be using "All In One SEO plugin" and "Google xml Sitemaps plugin". These are just the first basic steps for optimizing your wp-blog site.

      Nigel,

Wordpress is the best platform if you're doing SEO. Maybe you're over-reacting too soon?

I agree with ezbiz about using one H1 tag per page and using the Google xml sitemaps plugin. You may want to check SimpleTags plugin to take care of your sites internal linking.

While inserting text to the index.php file is possible, you may want to be careful when doing so. Altering something within a index.php file of wordpress might affect some other codes, etc and might end up messing up your site.

From what I know the index.php file of wordpress has different codes that it is pulling from all the other .php files, so even just adding or deleting a line might affect how the codes work and therefore will affect how your site looks/functions.

      Good luck.

Keep in mind, the index.php is usually structured for PHP includes for other pages, so it's really not recommended. For example, I had to insert a custom widget on the main page, and that code was inserted into the home.php which the index.php has a include tag for that part. You really shouldn't do it that way unless you're customizing your own custom theme, and you really know what you're doing.

      Nigel,

If you're having a problem ranking your homepage for your main keyword I would recommend to optimize for your 2nd tier keywords (deep link to your inner pages/posts). And promote your promotions!

Once you're ranking those pages in the SERP results then it is time to go after your main keyword.

      All the best,
