Moving from one host to another

Hey guys,

I'm currently with one host, and am not entirely satisfied with the service. I'd like to move all of my info, my websites, etc, to a new host before my old one renews.

Does anyone happen to know a way to pull this off without having downtime on the site, file loss, etc?

Thanks guys, I'm honestly stumped.

Which hosting were you using? My webhost does this for free. If you want to do it yourself, it can be fairly simple. Just copy all the content from your old host to new one. If you are using CMS such as WordPress make some necessary changes. Once everything has been configured, point your domain to new server.

    Hi,

You can save your database and your files on CPU (backup). The site will still be running on your old site server. Once you have purchase server on the other hosting provider you can then upload the files on that server. The problem your going to have is some downtime switching the DNS domain to the other server and that may take up to 24 hours depending on your hosting provider. I'm sure that can "point" your domain to the other server with out any down time; however you might want to get with the hosting server provide for those questions.

Some hosts will help you move everything. I've helped a lot of clients move their sites to our servers with no downtime involved, it's not a difficult task and most hosts are happy to do it.

Yeh, if the new host your moving to isn't willing to move everything over for free with 0 downtime then that host doesn't deserve you as a client.

Like what Haymanpl mentioned earlier, the best option to go to if you're migrating your wordpress to another server is BackupBuddy - BackupBuddy : PluginBuddy | WordPress Plugins

If your websites do not utilize any databases, then it's even easier, just connect to your hosting through ftp, download everything to your computer.

FTP to your new webhosting account, upload everything up.

And finally, change your domain nameservers to point to your new hosting. Always change your nameservers last after uploading / deploying your files to the new host.

There's always downtime when comes to propagration, but as long as you feed the new hosting with all your old files, the transition should be smooth and you won't even notice that your site has changed hands.
