Hey guys,

I'm have a website put together by someone on elance. The truth is the guy is crap!

I have provided the mini site design, the sales letter, the images, and the videos. But he's has made a right mess of it. He hasn't used the right pictures, the fonts are all different and it is absolutley rubbish.

I'm going to fire him off and get my $250 back and have a go myself but I have never made a website so I don't have a clue where to start.

Is there a programme I can use that is easy?

Thanks!

I'm quite confused, you did mention that you have the mini site design, sales letter, images and the videos. Can you be more specific on what you're trying to do?

Do you mean that all your materials are still in PSD / PNG format and you're trying to get the layout up (HTML + CSS), etc.?

I have all the materials yes. I have given them to a web designer to put together into a sales page and he has made aright mess
      of it.

These days, you do not need to learn HTML or CSS to build a site yourself. I have built quite a few sites using Joomla and supplied templates. You can do it yourself with a little patience. Check out my Houston site Urbancitytv

You should look into getting a hosting and domain name account from someone like bluehost.com or godaddy.com. Then in the Cpanel you can have Wordpress installed for free. There are tons of templates (that actually look good). Plus plugins that will integrate with mailchimp, aweber and so on. Joomla is good to but I feel the learning curve is greater. There are also tons of free resources online to learn wordpress. Please do not get confused with wordpress.com.

I can have a site up and running in one day with no coding.

            Hope this helps!

Wordpress is good but is very limited. It depends on what your goals are and what you need from your site as far as features.

I haven't actually got the site on the internet yet. I never knew it would be so difficult to find a trustworthy web developer to help me

Dude, that's a piece of cake. Go to the Warrior for hire section, there are some darn good people here who do great work. I outsource most of my websites here.

I think everyone here missed the point entirely. He already has the mini-site, images, everything, already picked out. Sounds to me like he just wants them uploaded, basically.

Ben, check out post #6. Someone has offered to help you there. If s/he can't get it for you, send me a PM.

BTW, if you're trying to get a site up quickly, then learning to code HTML as you go is NOT the route you want to take.

I see. Well, if you want you can check your PM for my email and send me the material over there and I will make you something out of it, so that you can start with it (of course i cant do the whole site, as I have to do sites for my customers).

Additionally, Rollmodl has suggested to use joomla, wordpress or another content managment system. Thats might a solution for you, but if you want only a single site its a huge overkill.

For something that simple you do not need a content management system. It's more a less a days work if all the content is provided. There are many members here with sites like this. You may want to get recommendations on who did thiers.

If you've already got all the content and the graphics, this should be a breeze to setup. I did a similar setup at Beginning Facebook for Your Business

Can't imagine why it would cost you $250 for one page. I'll PM you with my info if you're interested. I can also show you a free or a low cost software to make your own minor tweaks to the page.

Do you already have hosting and a domain name?

    Hi Ben,

What you need to learn is HTML and CSS. I learnt through the Visual QuickStart Guide which was an excellent book and I often recommend to others.

I'd think carefully about investing the time in it though, it takes a while to learn and if you have skills in other areas you'd be better focussing on them and using the money you earn to pay someone else to do your tech work. From the sounds of your previous experience it may be worth trying a few different people on elance first before sending a whole project to somebody.

A pretty cool site that sells templates is themeforest.com, they have landing page templates with pretty good documentation on setting them up. Need to know how to code a little though.

Ben, you can do what you want fairly easily with something like Wordpress as others have suggest. For a one-page site, a content management system may be overkill, but it'll be helpful if you ever want to add to it, and it's easy to set up.

To make things easy and simple...

I would get a web host and learn WordPress.

No need to really learn anything too advanced or crazy.

1.Think of an idea for your new website. If you already know what you want to make your website about, skip this step.Try not to "copy" other's idea's. Create a website with a topic which you strongly love.
    2.Identify your market.
3.Do keyword research to determine if other people are searching for your topics and learn more about your potential clients
    4.Figure out your commitment.
5.You can also sell other people's products which will let you make money without investing in any products or worrying about shipping.
    6.Narrow down your list.
    7.Register your domain name
    8.Choose a web host.
    9.Research online website building services.
    10.Build your website.
11.Use keywords that your target audience would search for to get a better search engine ranking.
    12.Upload your website
    13.Test drive your website.
    14.Inspect your website.
    15.Advertise.
16.Use article marketing to get back links to your website which will also help your website get found by the search engines.
    17.Provide quality content and service

In todays day and age, where computer users are increasing by large numbers monthly, the website has developed as a means of self expression or as a launch point for business pursuits. There are countless ways of learning how to make a website using such tools as the WYSIWYG(What You See Is What You Get)HTML Editor. This is basically a point and click to create program. If you want a website fast, try it. Good places for these are myspace.com or your internet service provider. They can provide you with a free website where you can really be creative with there (what you see is what you get editor)HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language and was the standard language when the graphical user interface(GUI)was implemented
into the windows operating system. There are other languages that can be used to make a website, such as Flash, xml, dhtml and a few others. In my opinion, the most flexible language and most easy to learn is html.

If you are going to have a go at it yourself, you can download Dreamweaver and use it free of charge for 30 days at adobe.com (the same goes for Photoshop and most other Adobe products).

However, you may find it quicker, easier and that you get a better result if you do find another web designer. I do sympathise with your plight- we hear from loads of people who have been well and truly shafted by their designer.

Do you have any associates who could recommend a designer. Alternately, many web designers add a little credit at the bottom of pages they've created. Find some websites that you like, look for the designer's credit, and contact them directly.

    Good luck.

what type of site do you wanna make? blog site or manually designed html site?

for blogs obviously i'd recommend wordpress, for CMS (content management site, sites you can easily update and modify with user friendly interface) i'd recomment joomla
but for custom designed html sites, just use dreamweaver it's pretty damn easy.
