Stuck on wordpress

First off, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Okay,

So I have my domain and hosting set up. Just downloaded wordpress on hostgator...and now I'm stuck. I have absolutely no idea where to go from here. Can someone help me please?

    Jump right in.

    Assuming you installed WordPress, do the following:

    1) Go to your domain.com/wp-admin (change domain.com to your domain where wp is installed)
    2) Review the various tabs on the left-hand side. Dashboard, Posts, LInks, Pages --> and attempt to understand and correlate them to what you see on your site.
    3) Add a few posts, add a few pages, etc. --> You can't break anything, so go for it.
    4) Once you understand basic posts / pages, then you can move on to other tabs.

    There's plenty of tutorials (video and blogs) you can leverage via google search.

    Any questions, just let us know.

      Thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it. But apparently I did not install WordPress correctly because when I try to go to admin log in I get a 404 error.

      Thanks for the article. I am trying to manually install WordPress. I created the database, edited the config.php, and uploaded everything to the public_html folder. But when I go to mydomain.com/wp-admin, I get the same 404 error saying the directory cannot be found.

      Thanks for the help. I can't send PMs yet.


      Well I think I know what is going wrong. I deleted my database but the IP I was connected to using my FTP client showed that it was still there. So, apparently the address I was connecting to was not my domain.

      Now, when I type in my domain along with the user and password on my FTP client, I get the following message:

      Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".

      EDIT: after some help from hostgator, I have been told that the nameservers are not pointed in the right direction. Maybe this will help...

        * For the FTP issue, read: Network Configuration - FileZilla Wiki
        * Check the FTP details for your hosting
        * If your nameservers haven't been updated, please allow some time so that it is completely configured.
        * Make sure that the domain name points to correct web server

    I recommend just deleting whatever you tried to install on your domain and go the Fantastico route... (stolen from eHow.com since I can't post links yet)

    Log into your Hostgator cPanel (control panel).

    Scroll down until you're near the bottom of the page.

    Locate the section entitled "Software/Services."

    Click on the Fantastico icon. It's the one with the blue smiley face.

    On the Fantasico page, click the "Wordpress" text link on the left sidebar.

    Click on "New Instillation."

    Choose which domain you want this Wordpress install to be on. If you've got an individual site hosting plan, this will default to your one domain. If you have a shared hosting plan, choose which domain you want this Wordpress install to be on.

    In the section that says, "Admin access data," is where you'll put the login name and password you want to use to log into your Wordpress blog dashboard.

    Fill in the "Base Configuration" fields with the name you want to be associated with all the posts you write in your new blog. Also, add in your email address and the website's domain name for your new blog.

    Click "Install Wordpress."

    You will be given the domain information, to make sure that it's being installed on the correct domain. If it looks good, click "Finish Instillation."

    You're done. You've just installed Wordpress on your new website. Make a note of your login information and/or print out the information on the screen so that you can remember how/where to log in so that you can access your new blog.

      I made a WordPress tutorial that's free and covers just about everything you would need to know about how to use WordPress.
      People are charging for this same information but I believe that in keeping with the spirit of open source, which is what WordPress is all about, that to learn WordPress should be free so that's why I made this website.
