Not sure why Google did this, any ideas? I have a site with 5 pages excluding the homepage with these keywords I'm ranking for:

mycity family photographer
mycity baby photographer
mycity child photographer
mycity maternity photographer
mycity model photographer

Google just recently crawled these pages and for some reason Google ranked three of these five pages for the keyword "mycity baby photographer" even though I have all pages properly SEO optimized for separate keywords. Anybody have any idea why this may have happened?

    Ahh the mysteries of google....

Without having a look at the site or the backlink portfolio it would be difficult to make any assumptions (and even if I did see them I might not be able to draw any conclusions as sometimes google can't be explained, at least not by me)

However, there is something that you can check quickly:

Internal links move PR around your site. If you have loads of links going to your baby page from all over the site and very few going to the other pages then this would raise the authority of the baby page. So, google knows that your site is relevant to the other keywords but believes this page to be the most authoritive.

Also the first text link that google sees is supposed to be the most important (this info came from the guys who created market samurai) so if your home page's first text link is to babies then it will have more authority than the others.

Fix: Make more internal links to spread the PR around the site to the relevant pages or make these links no-follow to keep all the PR on the home page.

If this isn't the case or you have google analytics installed then it could be 1000's of reasons but the above process will still help.

    Hope this helps

Lately it seems Google is doing some really quirky things and this makes it difficult for those ranking local businesses trying to explain to a client that Google is making a lot of Algorithm changes and that is why your rankings have changed.

Sad to say but when I use Google organic search, I'm getting back crap, un-relevant results lately. Maybe that is why Yahoo/Bing has 30% of all searches now because their results are more relevant.
