    PHOTOSHOP (cs3 or better), Sumo Paint, Gimp ! Also you can buy great designs from fiverr for just $5.

      PhotoShop is obviously the most powerful but arguably the most difficult to learn also. I prefer Fireworks. It is also from Adobe and I find it more intuitive IMO. Both can be downloaded as 30 day demos from Adobe if you register on their site.

    It depends on how much you want to spend on a program to get a good result and how often you intend to use it I suppose.

    You could try the free one suggested by Ray or invest in Photoshop etc.

    Or you could try logocreator.com (web address might be different but it's called Logo Creator) which costs around $39 or something like that and you can get smooth and slick image results.

    I design logo's with illustrator; Photoshop is wonderful for everything else but I agree with IndigoJack. Go with what you can afford.
