Wordpress 404 not found error

When I go to my "Blog" page it shows me all my post and each one has the title at the top which is a link to the individual post and the url of the individual post has the permalink in the url structure.

Now it seems that if I actually click on that link it gives me a 404 Page not found error.

I have one post that actually connects to the correct page bu all others including the one I added today gets the 404 error.

Any idea what causes this?

    Permalinks? . htaccess?

Those are the first that come to mind.
    - does it work if you switch back to the default permalinks? (the ugly ones?)
    - is there any plugin that could mess with your settings? deactivating plugins and activating them one by one is always a good troubleshooting method...

      Istvan, you da man.

It was the permalinks setup apparently. I cleared the settings and set it back to default and then reset it back to /%category%/%postname%/ and that fixed it. Also there was a category base set which I cleared as well and left blank.

BTW, do you by any chance know why every place you look in the internet it says to use that structure for permalinks except Wordpress.org where it specifically say do not use that structure due to performance reasons.

remove htaccess and disable plugins, its a very odd problem to have! Check to see if the correct htaccess file is on there.

What was the new, useful information you added... that wasn't already spelled out above?

Yes, I know. Because the developers KNOW how the WP engine works and how it queries the database. IMers and other "SEO geniuses" don't...

I don't have time now to give you the explanation in details, sorry. I'll try to remember to post it.

Note. With a small number of posts it's not affecting the speed and performance. With a big blog it can create issues.
