Use one Wordpress theme for many sites?

I'm thinking about learning one particular Wordpress theme well, and trying to adopt it for different websites I want to develop.

I purchased Socrates theme, and even though you can customize, it seems to lack the real 'pop' effect of a top quality looking website. I believe that first impressions matter. A pleasing visually-appealing design is important to me.

So, I'm looking at elegant themes or themeforrest for something that is customizable but looks sharp.

I found 'Clockstone' by cmsmasters for sale at themeforrest.

Clockstone wordpress

Anyone use this theme or something similar to do all your Wordpress sites? Love your feedback.

Thanks,

Jeff

I do exactly what you're talking about, but I use Thesis.

The important point in taking this approach is not how the theme looks on the theme website, because you're going to be creating new designs for your different sites. It's how good the underlying coding is, how good the support is and the level of underlying functionality in the theme (for example SEO controls) that will enable you to avoid using too many plugins.

Don't worry too much about how it looks on the surface (you're going to be changing that), get in under the hood and see what's there - that's what you're going to be working with.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

Thesis is a good suggestion, it's definitely more of a "blank palette" to work with. I think the trick is always finding themes that don't look like themes. Clockwork is cool but it always sort of looks like it's for sale. Unless you're planning to run a Wordpress theme affiliate site, it's too slick for most sites out there and overwhelms the message.

Good free themes are curated (and offered) regularly at places like Noupe (design blog) and other Smashing Magazine sites. I use a free theme called Blog-o-folio for a health/lifestyle blog and so far it's working out well.

        Hope this helps

Have you seen Hybrid and its children? (free)

BTW, learn to work with children themes if you start with a framework. Easier for updates...

How about Flexibility theme. I think it can be used to many blogs. It's easy to customize and has many customization options.
