Social Network: phpFox or something else?

Hello everyone,

Looking to build a social network and originally I planned to use WordPress + BuddyPress (lots of WP experience), but on these forums I learned about phpFox. Think it might be better, no tweaking themes and plugins to make them work together (and having to update WP, BP, and plugins). Sounds like it should be more stable and hopefully faster.

The main set up of the site:

  • Free membership. Most of the features are available to free members (PM's, Groups, Forums, Profiles, Status Updates, Events, Photos, Videos, etc).
  • Blogs (may be paid or not have them)
  • Paid membership. People with services or products to offer in the site's niche, pay to have content pages devoted to them that are advertised on the website (Hence the uncertainty about blogs at the moment).
  • Paid membership for businesses. Costs a bit more, but they also get pages devoted to them and advertising on the website.

On phpFox, I see they have an actual marketplace, still need to play with that to see how it could be incorporated in to paid memberships. I read you could limit what each membership level can do, which will help. And they have a new update coming out soon and seem like they will be around for a long time. I don't want to pick software whose company will go bust any time soon. I also believe this could reach 500 members, but see room to grow to 5,000 or a lot more. So looking for the best software that could handle a larger membership (in my current price range), in case the site does take off. Don't want to have to migrate to something else.

I know I was vague, but does this sound like something good for phpFox? Or does anyone have any better suggestions?

The Dolphin software from Boonex.com has come a long way in recent years. You can download the software for free, and pay $100 to have the "made by Dolphin" link disappear at the bottom of page.

Most hosting companies have it as a free install via Softaculuos on Cpanel.

It has the ability for the user to have their own "wall", upload pics and videos, chat with other users. The admin has drag and drop features for modules on pages.

It sounds like the new version of phpFox will have drag and drop, but I'll check Dolphin out too. Had looked them over a few years ago, wasn't too impressed then.

      Thanks!

And thinking out loud.. haven't fully played with phpFox yet, but if there isn't an "easy" way to do the content pages, perhaps I could actually use the blog feature for that.

Edit: Oh, giving members the option of having actual store fronts. Like the idea, and looks like that is possible with Dolphin. Not sure about phpFox, yet.

Still playing around with these. Noticed phpFox actually requires a lot more than $99 dollars for all functions. So will explore Dolphin a bit more (hopefully it is just the demo, but it has been so slow for me). Also found out my host would need me to upgrade to a VPS, which is quite a bit of coin on their plans.

Arvixe claims on their website they can handle both on their basic plan. Anyone experienced with them? I imagine as the site grows, I'll need to upgrade the hosting, which wouldn't be a problem then. Just not now lol.

Anyone else have any other recommendations on software for SE's?
