Change of Platform...

Hi,

I'm currently running a membership site on MemberGate (MG) software. I want to close the MG site and switch the URL to a Wordpress platform. Ideally the MG site will close on a specific date and the WP site will open asap afterwards.

I need to build the WP site in advance of the switchover but obviously cannot use the same URL while the MG site is still active. Is there a solution that will enable me to change the WP URL to that used by the MG site before going live?

Many thanks.

John

You can either work on your local server and when your site is completed there you can simply upload the site and database on your webserver and get your site running on webserver.

you can install wordpress on your webserver in a folder named "NEW" now it will work like this yourdomainname.com - yourdomainname Resources and Information. , just copy paste your pages from previous site to this new one and once you are completed simply delete the old site and copy paste all the contents of the "NEW" folder in the PUBLIC_HTML folder and your new site will be running on wordpress.

    Thanks

      Hi,

Many thanks for a full, helpful, and interesting reply. I hadn't thought of this and will give it some consideration (mostly to evaluate if I'm technically capable of using this method).

      Kind regards,

      John

The backup plugin allows you to move your new wordpress site to any domain, server or host easily

Build it on another domain and then restore the backup using the plugin

You'll find a list or tutorials at the end of this link that will help you if you wish to do this manually

Here's a complete guide on getting started with WordPress
      Hi Brad,

Many thanks for a full and helpful reply. I think I know enough to be able to do this and by following your recommendation can tackle this with some confidence.

      Kind regards,

In cases like this I've installed wordpress blogs in a subdirectory of the original site and made the blog private (hidden for the search engines). Once the new blog was ready it was just a matter of transfering it from the subdirectory to the root folder (which, as haymanpl has said is easily done with a backup or cloning plugin) and then make the blog public for the search engines. Has worked every time for me.
