Optimum website width, what do you think?

Hello Warriors,

Nowadays, what is the preferred website width?

I have read somewhere that 40% or so still use 800x600 screens, so do you think it would be smart to have a website that those users can take pleasure in?

In your own observation, experience, and ideas, what is the optimum website width for mobile device? Are you considering this?

Any information you may provide will be highly appreciated.

    800 width -used to be ta very coonly used width - tends to look a bit dated on a more modern screen - 900-1000 - is becoming more common and looks good on a wider screen
    you can also play with a full width site but it can be a ticky thing to get the content blocks right

    re; mobile devices - need a different aproach there - ideally have a seperate site for them - a bit more info here

    I guess the optimal setting would be to make a page that will scale down if they use a small screen resolution (this is how wordpress does it too).

    You don't design your regular website for mobile phones - you should have a separate version you serve up for mobile users. Judging by some statistics I have seen, 99% of people these days use a screen size of 1024 x 768 or higher.

    Keep that in mind when designing your sites.

    For single sales pages t used to be 600px wide for text colunm with cell padding of 10px.

    Not sure if this is what you are asking, but I like to try and sound intelligent anyway.

    For most sites I use something between 950px and 1000px. I try to keep everything in columns these days to make it easier for mobile users.

    Interestingly, one of my clients has a mobile version of their website - with a button at the top left of the site which says "mobile users click here". They are an accommodation provider, so are the sort of site that people will look at on a mobile device.


    We don't have automatic detection to redirect. Interestingly - virtually no-one ever visits the mobile version. Their site gets around 100 visitors a day. The mobile version never gets more than 1 visitor a day and mostly 0.
