I would like to know how to create free floating images without a white/any background. Look at my site and you will see a PDF and Google places image on the home page with white background. How do I cutout the image and remove the white background?

Thanks a Million
Chris

PS I searched Google and even bought a PSD CS5 book, but i can not seem to be able to accomplish this.

So you want to remove the white background of the pdf logo and the google place ?

You must convert the image in png with transparent background. Since the image are low in quality did you have the orignal file ?

I want to cut the icon out and make it float on my homepage without a white squared background...it should be transparent and just sit on my homepage.

The image must be in a format that supports alpha channels, either gif or png file types. However just getting rid of a background color may or may not always be the answer. If the edge of the part of the image you are keeping is feathered it will often leave a halo or ghost edge behind that is not very attractive. For this reason it is often better to replace the background color with a color that matches the existing background.

if you don't have a layered PSD file...then really the only option is to do it manually...there is several techniques to do this...i personally use the magic wand tool....select the white background and delete it...you will to play with various tolerance setting values for this tool...try anywhere between 10-32...the higher the tolerance the more the forgiving the magic wand tool will be in including the next pixels color in the selection.

Sometimes you will still have some white edges around your objects that you will need to manually erase or use the blur/smudge tool to get rid of

    Thanks Everyone!!

I realized that the image can be extracted with the Quick Selection Tool, than cut and pasted to a new Transparent layer and it must be saved as a PNG file in that this is a file type that supports a transparent background on a webpage.
