Joomla permalink question

I am doing SEO work for a customer with a Joomla site. The internal pages end in numbers and I asked the designer if we could change to keyword friendly urls. He said that whenever he has tried to use friendly urls in the past it has screwed up the site structure. Anyone have an idea why this would be and how to fix?

I build sites in WordPress and it is easy to change to custom and use /%postname%/
I am assuming Joomla should be similar.

I have built quite a few sites for clients with Joomla and the only thing I can think of why they would say that is some sort of component they are using might not play well.. IMO. I really think their experience level is on the low side of the dam..

If he is your designer, I would seek the advice of another one.

If he is their designer, can you get around them without too much conflict?

You could as well politely ask to explain themselves a bit more thoroughly as it is extremely important that you get the links SEO friendly.

May I ask, is the site ecommerce?

    How many pages?

You can do a mod rewrite in Joomla by simply checking the option in Global configuration and renaming the htaccess.txt file to .htaccess.

As well, Joomla has some pretty good SEO components available that will take care of a lot of this. They also have plugins for various components that will help the SEO Component and Other component work together.

For instance take a look at ACEsef and their plugins for various components.

    Best of luck.

I think you will need more information if you want to trouble shoot here. However SEF links in general should not screwup the site structure per say. Perhaps the components you are using might not allow for maybe but many of the SEO components (ex SH404 SEF) will allow you to turn off SEF links for a given component or will have additional plugins as FBM mentioned.

This can also be related to the template used, dependent on how it loads in the css files, if you enable SEF urls with mod_rewrite and frontpage works fine but inner pages looks messed up or you get an internal server error then you should check that the server supports it or check how the css files are added in the template.
