Hey Warriors,

If you know anything about me, you know I'm a WordPress fanatic. Because I work with WordPress all day (and most nights), I have a couple of demo sites that I run the very latest (not yet released) beta versions of WordPress.

WordPress 3.3 has just reached RC1 (release candidate one) and is very close to becoming a full update and being made available to all WordPress site owners.

I thought you would all be interested to know that after you update, you'll be presented with a "What's New" screen. This has never been in WordPress before and I think it's a great usability improvement.

DRUM ROLL PLEASE!!!!

I present to you...a preview of what you'll be seeing within the coming week or two when you upgrade!

p.s. enjoy and comment and let's talk about what's new

Easier Uploading

File Type Detection

We’ve streamlined things! Instead of needing to click on a specific upload icon based on your file type, now there’s just one. Once your file is uploaded, the appropriate fields will be displayed for entering information based on the file type.

Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader

Adding photos or other files to posts and pages just got easier. Drag files from your desktop and drop them into the uploader. Add one file at a time, or many at once.

More File Formats

We’ve added the rar and 7z file formats to the list of allowed file types in the uploader.

Dashboard Design

Flyout Menus

Speed up navigating the dashboard and reduce repetitive clicking with our new flyout submenus. As you hover over each main menu item in your dashboard navigation, the submenus will magically appear, providing single-click access to any dashboard screen.

Header + Admin Bar = Toolbar

To save space and increase efficiency, we’ve combined the admin bar and the old Dashboard header into one persistent toolbar. Hovering over the toolbar items will reveal submenus when available for quick access.

Responsive Design

Certain dashboard screens have been updated to look better at various sizes, including improved iPad/tablet support.

Help Tabs

The Help tabs located in the upper corner of the dashboard screens below your name have gotten a facelift. Help content is broken into smaller sections for easier access, with links to relevant documentation and the support forums always visible.

Feels Like the First Time

New Feature Pointers

When we add new features, move navigation, or do anything else with the dashboard that might throw you for a loop when you update your WordPress site, we’ll let you know about it with new feature pointers explaining the change.
Post-update Changelog

This screen! From now on when you update WordPress, you’ll be brought to this screen — also accessible any time from the W logo in the corner of the toolbar — to get an overview of what’s changed.
Dashboard Welcome

The dashboard home screen will have a Welcome area that displays when a new WordPress installation is accessed for the first time, prompting the site owner to complete various setup tasks. Once dismissed, this welcome can be accessed via the dashboard home screen options tab.

Content Tools

Better Co-Editing

Have you ever gone to edit a post after someone else has finished with it, only to get an alert that tells you the other person is still editing the post? From now on, you’ll only get that alert if another person is still on the editing screen — no more time lag.

Tumblr Importer

Want to import content from Tumblr to WordPress? No problem! Go to Tools → Import to get the new Tumblr Importer, which maps your Tumblog posts to the matching WordPress post formats. Tip: Choose a theme designed to display post formats to get the greatest benefit from the importer.

Widget Improvements

Changing themes often requires widget re-configuration based on the number and position of sidebars. Now if you change back to a previous theme, the widgets will automatically go back to how you had them arranged in that theme. Note: if you’ve added new widgets since the switch, you’ll need to rescue them from the Inactive Widgets area.

Under the Hood

Flexible Permalinks

You have more freedom when choosing a post permalink structure. Skip the date information or add a category slug without a performance penalty.

Post Slugs: Less Funky

Funky characters in post titles (e.g. curly quotes from a word processor) will no longer result in garbled post slugs.

jQuery and jQuery UI

WordPress now includes the entire jQuery UI stack and the latest version of jQuery: 1.7.1.

is_main_query()

This handy method will tell you if a WP_Query object is the main WordPress query or a secondary query.

WP_Screen API

WordPress has a nice new API for working with admin screens. Create rich screens, add help documentation, adapt to screen contexts, and more.

Editor API Overhaul

The new editor API automatically pulls in all the JS and CSS goodness for the editor. It even supports multiple editors on the same page.

    So with jQuery being loaded into WP, will it detect if JQ has already been loaded before trying to load it as well? Most of my WP sites run inside custom templates that load the jQuery 1st.

    Wow, the wordpress team is taking everything again to the next level.

    These new features could truly be of big help and even make the admin dashboard more user friendly.

    I really love wordpress in fact I am a huge fan of it. I am setting up wordpres sites everyday using different premium themes.

    I can't wait to use the new wordpress and experience its power.

    Thanks a lot for sharing this ZaphodBeebleBrox, the least I can do for you is to hit the "Thanks" button.

    Cheers,

    Glad to hear about the widget update and the drag and drop is going to be cool.

    I just wish they would come up with a simple "undo" button for those times when you accidentally erase half your post before saving.

    WorpPress is so freaken awesome - I love it. I do hope the updates don't make some of our more advanced plug ins obsolete though.

    Thanks for sharing this.

      Widgets: I believe the "saved Widgets when changing themes" is still good to go, but I just saw an update last night that one Widget feature they were adding has been reverted due to ongoing bugs.

      This feature was to allow shortcodes in Widgets "by default". It's still possible to do by adding a code snippet to your theme's functions file, but it won't be included in this update.

      Undo Button: This can be done and is already included in WordPress by default. It's called "Revisions" and your posts/pages are autosaved at certain intervals (unless you have added code to your wp-config.php file to turn this off). Look at the very bottom of the page while in Edit Mode and you'll see them

    I've had a bit of a play with the 3.3 beta too and a lot of the new features are very cool.

    My personal favorite is the drag and drop uploading - very handy.

    My personal 'not favorite at all' is the forced fly out menus. I know there has been a big debate going back and forth in the WP forum & with the devs over whether this should be optional or not. I think also someone has already created a plugin to deactivate the fly outs.

    I help a lot of people who are just getting to know WordPress, and I know not being able to see the sub options all the time if they choose to is going to make the learning process much more difficult.

    Basically, until you've memorized every single sub menu item you're going to have to hover about trying to find where that admin area you want is.

    It's fine for folks who've been using WP for years, but for people new to WP and also when new plugins are added whose menu items are now hidden, it's going to cause major headaches.

    I hope that the devs listen to the folks asking for it to be an "on / off" option people can use if they choose to. I haven't checked back on the thread in a while so it's possible they may have already.

    But other than that, as usual stellar work from the super awesome WP dev team. Looking forward to digging into some of the new API features to see what they can do.

    Thanks for the post!

      I have to agree with you there Kezz. It just doesn't make sense does it? I still plan on using Ozh's Admin Menu Dropdown plugin as I find a horizontal nav SO much easier to use instead of scrolling up and down all day long

      You mentioned the API changes...are you a plugin dev by any chance?

        Yeah I think the volume of questions the WP forums, not to mention independent devs, will get from people is going to explode. Tbh I'm not looking forward to the fallout, but I am getting ready to try and help people through the inevitable confusion as much as possible.

        I'd really like to use a plugin to get the admin area the way I like it because there are certain submenu items I click all the time and this flyout system is going to slow everything down. But then my concern is if I'm not seeing the same thing as the people asking me questions, I may be less prepared to help.

        I think it's very much like Tim said, where sometimes the attitude is "Tough, too bad for you noob" from some of the devs. Of course I appreciate them and all their hard work very, very much and they make what I do possible.

        However it's also true that sometimes you have to remember that the people actually using your software are not the same super experienced people that you interact with through the dev cycle and in your office. Sometimes it's more important to listen to a beginner with your software than a pro.

        I am indeed a plugin dev, and in particular I'm interested in the option to create contextual help. Though that said, I also really hope we don't have to see the same help popups every time we freshly install a 3.3 site or plugin.

        I'm also interested to see how things go using the full in built jQuery UI. I've had to use my own imported jQuery UI in the past as trying to get WP to play nicely with newly added aspects of it was not pretty. Having everything accessible in core could be very helpful.

        All in all I'm sure the update is going to be great, and eventually I'm confident the ability for flyout menus to be optional will be added too once the fallout kicks in.

        Do you know much about what the new editor API changes will allow for? Is it the multiple instances that are the main thing?

    There are some other things too that might raise some eyebrows, because of the way the new system is designed, some plugins, may no longer appear in the admin menu the way you might expect, (basically cutting off access to that plugin)

    That is some of what Kezz was saying about discussions, (to put it mildly) are somewhat hot on occasion, with some saying "tough you should have been paying attention," Wow, So, the number one thing about this update, for me is that I will not, repeat Not, be updating to 3.3, because I have custom plugins that will loose functionality, yes, it would be nice to have the super cool flyout menus, (hover, menu powered, by Jquery) but all in all, I think I will pass on that until I can figure out how to fix the plugins, I have,

    I tested one out yesterday, to see what would happen in 3.3 and as I suspected, KaBam, the plugin activated, but no where did any menu item appear, which "cut off" the plugin, from the admin section, no way to access it at all.

    Wow, is all I can say, some of these plugins I use every day some every once in a while, but to be honest, I just will not be upgrading to 3.3 until I have a fix for the 12 plugins that this "Great update" will Break...

      Great to know and at the same time, NOT great to know.

      I see a public uproar after the 3.3 release from plugin devs who haven't updated their plugins and are now receiving frantic support requests, and the users wondering what the hell happened.

      Time will tell how it all works out...

    Yes, that is certain, I know one thing for sure, I say thanks for posting this thread, because I have no intention of upgrading, to 3.3, because after all, what do I have to have? nothing special at all as far as I can see, I can load Jquery from any plugin, I want, so I think I will skip this one, at least for the first 8 weeks, )

    There's a lot of confusion about the jQuery note - all it means is that the jQuery library included in the core has been upgraded to 1.7.1 instead of 1.6.xx. Also jQuery UI is available from the core files where it wasn't before.

    None of the behaviors have changed - if a plugin or theme developer wants to use jQuery, they still have to enqueue the scripts as before. They are NOT automatically loaded on the front end as some seem to think.

      So far so good for me. Testing it out on a limited number of sites. I am scared about all the potential plug in issues cause I use a variety of very unique plugins and some I have "customized". And some of the themes are already asking to be updated (which normally means I loose all my customizations :rolleyes

      BUT... I am not complaining. WP is awesome and I actually even like the navigation pop out thing. It prevents me from having to scroll the page down on the bulkier sites (lots of plug ins) I have.

      I didn't use the drag and drop, but it's a cool feature (especially when you want to upload a bunch.

      And the promise of the changes with the widgets saving is VERY VERY cool. I haven't had to try it out yet (luckily), but that can be a real pain in the butt with more complex sites where you decide to change the theme or have a major upgrade.

      Anyway. WP is one of the coolest things IMO and they still haven't sold out or tried to steal our privacy. It's difficult to imagine needing something that WP can't do with some mod or plug in.

    I am still testing the new release out, but have not updated any of my production websites, because I have custom plugins, and themes, to be honest, I just do not see all the hype and hoopla, there are some interesting things going on in the back end, but for the most part, what this thing does is break backwards compatibility with previous versions.

    I always have a test installation setup to see how it works as there are usually some issues that cannot be predicted in advance.

    It does sound like a lot of people are having this MySQL issue, but it could also be a dozen different things each website is different.

    I was having some issues with the admin_bar. I had external software checking for login validity in the head, but, if the admin_bar function was removed, the software stopped working.
    I fixed it by disabling the admin bar (known, since 3.3, as the "toolbar") in the CSS, as I cannot tamper with the function itself. The CSS code I added to my theme's stylesheet was:

    Code:
    /* hide the admin bar */
    #wpadminbar { display:none; }
    I was then left with the 28px issue, as when users are logged in, unless the admin_bar is disabled, the header is shifted down by 28px (in my theme, Optimizepress, it was actually the body that gets shifted), and this leaves a horrible space at the top if the admin bar is there, but invisible.
    To correct this issue, I added the following function to my header.php file:

    PHP Code:
    <?php if ( is_user_logged_in() ) { ?>
    <style  type="text/css" media="screen">
    body { margin-top: -28px!important; }
    </style>
    <?php ?>
    It's uncommon for people to code software which uses the WP core features to check for valid logins, but, still, for whatever reasons YOU may have to want to do something similar, I hope this helps
