All on a laptop

WEB DESIGN

How many of you do all of your web design and video editing on a laptop? If so, what are the specs? Just bought a new desktop; set it up; now it growls when it boots up and when it comes out of sleep mode. (possible HD issue.) It's only 3 hrs old. WOW! My laptop never gave me this LOUD sound from the HD. If I were sure I could do everything on a laptop, I would return it and buy one spec'd for the job.

HDD sometimes, but there is also another issue for this like CPU, Motherboard and RAM, most of the desktop seller give a 1-2 years warranty kindly call your seller for this issue and ask for the replacement

Drives are easy to replace...you want it quiet...go with a SSD.

With technology shifts, 3 years is OLD!

I've run my offline publishing business from a MacBook Pro for the past 6 years. I've never had any problems and everything runs just fine.

I like really much the HP brand, you can get very good specs for a fair price; my last 3 notebooks have been HP, I had one issue just one time and it got resolved fast.
There's one for each need and budget.

Are you certain that the HDD is what is producing the noise? If so, try switching it out with another, and see if the sound still occurs. I had a similar issue at one stage, where my computer would make a lot of noise in start-up (and eventually this extended to all the time). Turns out the problem was the fan in the PSU - took it apart and sprayed some WD40 for lubricant, and it worked fine after that, with no noise.

The first things I would look at though would be any components with a fan (PSU, CPU, cooling fans on case etc). Next I'd look at the HDD, as a defective one of those could make noise.

If the computer is still under warranty (which after just 3 hours, you'd hope it would be!), then you might as well contact the vendor and find out whether they can have it checked out or replaced (if you aren't computer-savvy, this might be the better option).

I actually do everything on a laptop computer.
That's basically because I don't have a desktop computer. xD

But yes, laptop now-a-days can handle most applications that a desktop can.

Same with me, a laptop is nice, I prefer to use my tablet, but a desktop is used for the majority of the work. I use the tablet more for reading, watching video's, and portability.

Plus I use two monitors, not always an option with a laptop.

I completely run my web design business from my MacBook Pro and SugarSync. I used to have an external hard drive...but no backup. It cost me $1300 to fix it once when I dropped it. Whatever you do, be smart and keep a backup somehow.

I do just about everything related to html and php design on my HP DV7 500GB laptop. It is perfect. Though I have six computers altogether and each for different functions. eg. One computer is completely devoted to stocks and forex and usually runs 24/7. On the other hand, I have a desktop that I use for record keeping. I use all of them frequently, though only two of them are laptops. But yes buddy, I do all of my design on a laptop. A very powerful laptop. lol

I use laptop for my web design and many more activities.I have a Dell laptop. The laptop is more beneficial then desktops. For any external uses the laptop is good. I use USB mouse to connect it for working fast on my design. Far away the home laptop can be used much like in collage and in any company.

The laptops these days are pretty powerful with multi-core processors, cheap RAM and can handle heavy duty applications like VS2010, Photoshop, etc...

But I prefer a desktop over a laptop. Easier to maintain, upgrade, more powerful for the same price and of course comfortable to use!

For web designing, a high-end computer is not a prerequisite. I have been creating websites and themes as a pro on a 3-year old laptop. I have a new laptop, but I am still more comfortable with the old one. If your laptop is making noise, there must be some problem. Get it replaced or repaired.

Since start of 2007 I'm only using a Laptop for the majority of my work. First it was a 17" Windows Laptop running Win XP, then in late 2008 I switched over to a 15" MacBook Pro. In early 2011 I swapped that MacBook Pro for a 13" MacBook Pro 2010 edition.

Dayjob = pc
Home = laptop

Both do fine but I much prefer a desktop because it's soooo much more comfortable with the chair, mouse accessibility, and giant monitor. Speakers are also a plus.

  There's no way I could seriously work on a laptop.
  I just put up a new machine and I think I'm into it for about $1,500. I started with an I7/Motherboard combo that I got From Newegg for about $450. Used my old case and one of my old HDD, Got 16GB of RAM for about $200. I got a copy of Windows 7 from Ebay for $99. Most of my other software I was able to transfer to the new machine. The machine this replaced was about 6 years old. Truth is I probably could have just replaced the motherboard but If I was going to do that I figure I was about due for an updated machine.
  
  Also a while back I put up a 6TB RAID array. The read/writes from the RAID are pretty fast especially over a GB switch/network
