Hello,

I own a small coffee supply business. My internet website is fine but more and more people have smartphones.

I would like to have a mobi version of my site.

How do I do it? Do I create a small website, and add a sub-directory to my current site and then up-load it there?

How does the phone know there is a mobi version?

What is the best size to do the site in?

I would love to hear from you

You should get a website design with 'responsive layout'. This way your site would work perfectly on all devices. You do not need to create another version of the website.

A responsive design will not work perfectly on all devices, it may fit or look good - but in reality can leave a mobile visitor far from a good mobile experience based on performance. Typically responsive designs are slower due to their bloated code, and wont validate, and won't currently be detected as mobile by google or the google mobile search bots.

For me an adaptive design would be far superior, a design that changes everything from the doc type to the size weight of the resources it delivers based on user agent detection. It would be a far better choice for speed, validation and user experience, it would also be detected as mobile by the google mobile search bot as well as be accessible by the broadest range of mobile devices.

For me keep responsive design to desktops and tablets, and use adaptive and/or specific lightweight design for mobile.

Keep in mind that Google has mobile search bots and mobile speed tests analysis, as well as specific mobile analytics for a reason, read through and understand what they think about mobile validation too, whilst not necessarily important now as mobile becomes more and more mainstream I will edge a bet that these will all factor in the bigger picture.

End of the day choose what you thinks best...

I also second WillRs mobile WSO and Quentin's WSO is also worth a look at too.

      Hope that helps,

      Jay

    Quickcup,

Look in the WSO section for WillR WSO on Mobile Templates. It's really good and has a redirect script included in it.

The cheapest and best I know of is dudamobile .com, Simply input your URL and out comes your mobile website. Edit it and there you go. Works with most websites I have tried. Cost 9 bucks a month. Easy, Easy, Great resource.

I'm in a similar situation to quickcup though I have a fair size daily traffic since its a news related site. Does having a Responsive Design help develop mobile apps for said website? I assume with a good Responsive Design/mobile version - you can sort of wrap it into an app?
