Hi warriors, I have an order to design a website for a client. The client wants it designed in Joomla. What is the main difference between Joomla and WordPress? I have designed 6 websites in WordPress, and I have already taken the order.

The basic difference between WordPress and Joomla is that Joomla was created as a portal- or community type site while WordPress was created as a blogging interface, however Both overlap each other in several areas and can be extended beyond their original purpose thanks to the use of plugins.

It is generally considered to be not as user friendly as wordpress so if it is a must to have a joomla site then you should have a look at getting the work outsourced, you can get it done quite cheap with a quick turnaround.

    Hope this helps

Just because you were able to install WordPress 6 times... please, don't call yourself a "web site designer". There is nothing to "design" in WP - unless you made a completely unique theme for each of your six websites.

Sorry, I am not picking on you, personally, it's about a general mentality.

And as a general rule from a person with almost ten years of freelancer 'web making experience' - never take a job if you are not 110% sure how to finish it.

On the 'surface' (frontend) the difference is not that big between the two CMS; however, on the backend, where you are supposed to do your job - it is quite different, requiring a steep learning curve.

The honest thing would be to give back the job...

I think you better start studying joomla because the learning curve is high.
I might be going general opinion here but if I were you I would stick to 1.5 so that you find enough help.
Joomla is much more complex - yet simple!
Look into template overriding and maybe a boiler template to start from.
    Good luck..
oh yeah, or give back the job!

WordPress is one of the easiest for use systems available today in the internet. Although, many people think that the WordPress can be used for blogging only, you can easily configure it to work in many other ways. Furthermore, to install that CMS on a server is really easy.

Joomla on the other hand is one of the best content management systems for designers, web developers and administrators. That system allows all its users to create great looking websites and also it is really easy for use, by beginners. Furthermore, there are many developers, who create tools, which rapidly improve the performance of Joomla.

The basic difference between WordPress and Joomla is that Joomla is a portal- or community type site while Word Press is a blog. Both are free to use and many hosting providers have them as an option in their web tools section.

The new Joomla 2.5 will give you some functions, that are far away from Wordpress.

I will point to Joomla smart search, which is very nice feature, that give`s you the search result like Google results, in your website.

Wordpress in other hand is great CMS for blogging.

With Joomla you can build powerful portal in few minutes, the back-end of Joomla is designed with style and has great user friendly look.

Wordpress is extremely easy to use and is very simple when you want to add an image, publish a page or a new item, whereas Joomla is more feature rich and has more of a “frustration phase” in which you try to do the slightest modification and it does not work..

I never thought Joomla was that difficult to learn.

Anyway, start learning... perhaps use a theme and edit it then try to customize it a bit so you can overcome your learning curve and be able to offer it more regularly. Joomla is great, I prefer it for most websites.

Interesting that so many people I talk to still see WordPress as just for "blogging". As pointed out earlier, they are both CMS software. I have made many WordPress sites where the client doesn't need or want the blogging element (even though I encourage it). They are more concerned with being able to manage the site on their own and the functionality/SEO benefits provided by WordPress(and extended through a huge library of plugins).

Joomla is a good choice if you want to create a community or a network with a membership area, newsroom, forums, articles. Wordpress is a friendly blog system and because WordPress is web standard, Google really loves it.

Jommla and wordpress both are the open source of CMS. But both of these CMS are based on different theme models. Most of web designers choose Wordpress because it has well designed back end and wide range of excellent themes.

If the client wants Joomla, then you should ask, "Why do you want to use Joomla?" Most of the time it is because of some crap that they read on a web. Everyone has an opinion.

Here is where I differentiate the two.

If someone wants a relatively small site that is easy for them to manage themselves, there is nothing simpler than using WordPress.

If someone needs a large site with many thousands of pages, then Joomla will do a better job of managing this. WordPress sometimes chokes with huge sites. It makes no sense at all to use Joomla unless the client wants to use some of Joomla's special features.

You will find both the learning curve and the number of bugs to be much greater with Joomla.

As a developer I much prefer Joomla, it is a great framework to code with.
All those people singing the praises of wordpress, have you ever had to migrate a wordpress install to another domain/subdirectory? Absolute urls stored in the database mixed with other parameters, serialized -- shudder.

Obviously WordPress CMS is thousand better than Joomla. It is the most easiest CMS and also popular then Joomla. Even, I am using WordPress from many years and becoming a great fan of it. Here is the reasons why I like WordPress:

-1- You don't need to be decent in PHP and XML to design a WordPress theme. All you need is to design your theme in HTML, download WordPress, open the default theme (currently Twenty Ten), and look at the little functions that pull posts, images, stylesheets, etc...

-2- Joomla has something called modules, and another thing called components. WordPress has only Plugins.

-3- Decent Joomla plugins are not free, or are out dated, or are poorly coded, but in WordPress, you can find almost any plugin you wanted for your site in WordPress's plugin repository for free.

-4- There are more WordPress fanatics than Joomla. They can help you for free.

-5- Joomla is complicated. It's administrator dashboard is frustrating to newbies; WordPress has taken care about back-end usability.

-6- WordPress supports custom post types, custom nav menus and post formats. Joomla does not (or it does in a difficult way).

-7- About 10% of the whole internet (the websites) is powered by WordPress.

-8- You can use WordPress for anything you want: simple blog, CMS, forum, job-board, project management system, question and answer site, e-commerce site, online dating site, etc... It's a framework.

I would wish to highlight few major variations between Wordpress and Joomla. each square measure Content Management Systems as we all know and each square measure Open supply (available at freed from value to everyone). but functionally there some major variations as follows:

Joomla: Now Joomla with all its extensions is best for building an honest solid web site with all the options you need. And you'll bring it to high rankings within the search engines furthermore, if you begin with the right technical enhancements.

Templates in Joomla create it simple to urge an honest layout for the location, and you'll notice a lot of smart free Joomla templates. For an honest business web site we'd suggest to seem for an honest business example supported a Table less style with external CSS files.

    WordPress:
As we have a tendency to already told WordPress is that the King of Blogging software system, you can't beat WordPress, particularly if you are doing the correct setup, creating the permalinks work throughout the .htaccess file setup and conjointly putting in the choices to /%postname%/. making posts and giving it the special keyword tags is actually straightforward.

Templates for WordPress also are terribly straightforward to get and to implement. additionally a Google crawler loves WordPress Blogs
