Advice for moving a website for a client

A potential client contacted me to manage some of their website, one of the first things he wants me to do is move this website from its current hosting service (some small private hosting company) to GoDaddy. I have really only worked with wordpress websites, but it seems like this should be too hard. Is there anything you warriors think I should lookout for when doing this?

If it were a wordpress site I could do it with my eyes closed (done a quite a few) but never moved a non WP site.

Thanks!

Ugh, GoDaddy. GD is a pain to work with because of their "security".

If you'd like, we can host him BlueLayerHost - Reliable Hosting, Professional Service and move the site for free if you'd like.

It really depends on the website. If it's a html, piece of cake! Just copy/paste the whole thing :-)

If not, the main thing you should consider is the database connection. If it connects to the database, you need to edit the file that stores the database details (host, database name, username an password). There are a few more things that might need to be considered, like htaccess variables, include paths, etc.. If you want, i can help you with moving the site. Just PM me if you need any help.

I don't know about you, but i've been using Godaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost and many other big hosting companies and Godaddy is the s**t! I'm not sure why you are saying that "security" is a pain. Security is the most important thing in a hosting server.

Because we feel our customers shouldn't have to play guessing games when creating a database name for example. They should have access to all their tools via Cpanel right in front of them. GD chooses to over complicate things.

just generate full site backup with databases and then ask to godaddy that extract all the backup ,
then they extract your account in goddady and all link with databses automatically created,
no need to download or upload backup , it's all process is remotly,

If it's currently on cPanel just do a full cPanel backup and give that to the new web hosting company to restore on the new account.
