Adding a blog to my website

Hey guys,

Just recently had our website redesigned, everything is looking great BUT we don't have a blog on our site, and we really need one.

We want a customised blog that will look just like one of our existing webpages (i.e. integrated into the theme of our site, not just wordpress or whatever).

The current designer said it would cost fortunes for him to make a blog (which I found pretty strange).

So why should it cost so much? And does anybody have any advice on how we can get a blog integrated to our site?

Thanks in advance

You could add a sub-directory folder to your root file, name it "blog" or whatever you want, install Wordpress, then use the Atahualpa theme (free) to customize the look to re-create your static site.

I have done this for many clients.

It would be helpful if you provide your domain name. I realize you cannot insert a link to your site so just type out your domain like: mysite.com.

    Hey LA Grouch,

Thanks a lot for that reply.

Unfortunately, we don't have an active site at the moment, looking to have the new site launched in the next week or two.

I will look into what you said, and if it seems to difficult for me to do myself, maybe I will rely on your services

For the record: making a blog with the free WP script doesn't cost anything.

Designing/coding a custom WordPress theme based on your existing design... that's not cheap. Although it depends on who you hire.

      Hi -

Using Wordpress as the CMS (content management system), it's not difficult to create a bog which would match your new main site beautifully. Look at Wordpress as the operating system, nothing more; your present programmer most certainly is not required to reinvent the wheel and create a whole new blog operating system..

I would be happy to help you achieve exactly what you are looking for. PM me if you are interested.

      Anne

EDIT: To respond to Istvan, I was offering to help and advise only... I have more than enough on my plate at the moment and wasn't offering myself for hire..

I don't see why anyone would charge a fortune for just one blog page. He can easily just reuse some of the design and just re arrange it. It is normal for the first page to cost more but not for any others.
As for the WP theme. It is super easy to install but just like Istvan pointed it will be costly to customize. There are services out there that deal with that and the rate goes anywhere from 150$ and up. You can also get a freelancer to do that for a lower rate.

I'm guessing you asked your developer to create an html blog infrastructure from scratch which would indeed be very expensive and not the best use of your money. As Grouch suggested, you can install WP on a subdirectory and then you can find a theme that will allow your designer to make it look just like your main site. Even if you have to buy a theme, it won't cost more than $100 or so.

On your main site, you'll add a Nav item for the blog and then on the blog you can create a nav bar with the same items as the main site.

The other good thing is that you will be able to add blog posts yourself and not be dependent upon the webmaster to do that part for you.

Wordpress is definitely the way to go on this. If your current designer cannot do it hire someone who can.

If all else fails make a blog on blogspot.com and linking it back to the home page of your website.

    Good luck.

Thanks a lot guys for all the responses, really appreciate the advice.

I will take this advice on board and start to do some research into the WP blog.

I wrongly assumed that using a wordpress blog, I wouldn't be able to have the blog page look just like any other page on my site.

Thanks once again, and will probably be in touch with some of you in the near future!

I would also like to add - you need to research the Wordpress system via wordpress.org NOT wordpress.com - two entirely different animals

Just a reminder (to everybody) - asking for quotes and/or offering jobs is NOT allowed in this forum.

Please, post job requests or your service offers in the proper forums, like Warriors for Hire and/or Wanted...

Simple, Powerful Free Widgets for your Website You can embed this free blog widget inside your web page. It's just a code you copy and paste into your page. It's rare to find one as fully featured as this one for free.

As said in previous posts, wordpress: https://wordpress.com works really well for blogs as it is easy to integrate into your site. You can either make the blog static or use a plugin to embed the blog.

Creating a blog is in fact free and easy to build. and Wordpress is one option to do this.
even a non-programmer can do this in a day in my opinion.
