I have noticed that this is an issue for a lot of newbies.

The fix is actually simple.

The attached guide is a quick walk through of how to clean the free WP themes without issues. My wife and kids know nothing about PHP and can clean a theme in about a minute using this very method.

    1. You are download a free theme. Someone went through the effort to make this theme, so that is why they have a credit link on the bottom.
    2. I agree that having a credit link in the footer looks bad.
    3. Solution - Buy a theme that allows you to remove credit link.

Tip: If you don't like being sued, I know I don't!, read the TOS before removing any footer links.

The links are to crap sites, not the author's site.

It is preferable to get good themes, but, as the number of those purchased themes increases in usage you end up with the same footprint issues that the free themes give.

Thanks for pointing out the part I did miss in this, taking out the author's link is different than removing the links to crap sites.

Well then yes, get rid of the crap site links. I thought you were referring to removing the authors credit in free themes.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Download themes only from trusted sites; e.g. WordPress › Free WordPress Themes

    2. I wish it was always that simple as the OP presented it...
The method above works only with themes made by beginner "coders".
I have seen cases where more "advanced" jerks have lines in the functions.php that will screw the whole blog if the user edited even one line in the footer.php (or any other file holding the crap links).
