Help installing themes

I am going to be designing a site for my mom. She has found a theme that she likes (her site is about upcycled clothing) and the theme has a vintage / girly design to it. I am good with the technical stuff but do not have a creative bone in my body. So it would be nice to have a theme that already "looks" the way she wants it to.

A couple questions:

1. I have only used themes right out of wordpress. I could just click "install theme" and it was done. Since she found this theme on the internet somewhere, I am sure I am not going to be able to do it so easily. I have googled "installing wordpress with FTP" and watched a few videos but it seems really over my head. I know where to find the files in my hosting account, but don't know how to get the new theme into the files. What is the easiest way to do this, and will a newbie be able to accomplish it?????

2. Since this is a random theme that she chose for looks is it likely to have what I need to set the site up properly? Or are these cutesy themes, just cute, and not functional????

Thanks for all the help and sorry if these are ignorant questions.

It is a simple as dropping that theme's folder into your theme folder on the server.

I really would not trust random theme you found on the internet. Figure out where you found it before installing it on your server.

I tried this with another theme, and it did not work. I saved the folder to my desk top and then tried to drop it into the file that holds the other themes but it would not "drop". I will check out the theme more and where it came from when I get home. For some reason it is blocked on my computer at work. I am a teacher and apparently they don't trust us .

If you have the theme in a zip file that you downloaded from another site. Simply log into the Wordpress wp-admin dashboard, click Appearance > Themes > click the Install Themes tab at the top of the right content area > Click the Upload link at the top, below the Install Tab > browse your computer to find the zip file > Click the Install Now button > then click the Activate link to make that theme live on the site. In 99% of the zipped themes, this works. The only time it doesn't is if for some reason the theme designer zips the theme with an extra folder; then will need to unzip first, and either upload via FTP into the wp-content/themes folder; OR, re-zip only the theme files inside a single folder.

Thanks so much! I feel so ignorant, I never even noticed the "upload" link. I don't actually have the file saved yet since I can't get to it until I get home tonight, but I will be really anxious to see if it works.

The whole upload via FTP is what I was so confused about. I tried doing this with another theme, but was lost. So hopefully it will work the first way you mentioned. Thanks again.
