I am having an incredibly difficult time picking a font for my main body content. Of all of the fonts I see, none really look that good, and most aren't even web-safe. Are there any good fonts that you prefer for web designs?

You might want to check out Google Web Fonts. These fonts are easy to use and web safe. These fonts are served from Google servers and so the visitor will always get to see it the way you want the site to appear.

FontSquirrel is an excellent source of web safe fonts, and it has a killer @font-face generation tool too. I use this for all my professional/commercial sites.

google web fonts do work very well, but I also use fonts from typekit sometimes, there're some really good fonts from them that are not available elsewhere. Its powered by Adobe btw.
