Local Internet Marketing Brainstorm

Hi Warriors,

Just taken on a great little local internet marketing project and wanted to bounce some ideas/thoughts around on the forum before I dive in and mess everything up

The concept is to do a local community portal - more resident-oriented rather than visitor oriented. While the main focus of the site in early days will be reviews - Entertainment, Eating Out etc., I'm hoping to get community involvement and participation - e.g. interview with local trader of the week, upcoming community festivals etc.

With my "local resident" hat on for my own community, I thought of all the things that I'd be interested in for my own demographic: married, small kid, shops local - such as kids activities, summer fetes, new stores in the town centre, a bit of local gossip, have your say on the new council rules and such.

After doing some research, I've homed in on Geo Theme (Geo Places +) on Wordpress. The reason I haven't looked at any of the PHP solutions out there is mainly cost. Wordpress is also very much in my comfort zone.

Does this sound about right or do I need to do some more digging?

    Geo Theme as I haven't used it looks like from the surface a good theme to use and your concept look good as well. You may want to gather up as many HOA's in the are as you can to market them when you have a good demo put together. Can also sell ad space to local biz

    Sorry, HOA are Home Owner Associations. Normally large developments that are new within the last 12 years or so have HOA's. They are formed by the developers / residents and act as council for things like: landscaping contractors, pool maintenance and lifegaurds, etc for there development. They have a president/vice president/secretary/treasure. They collect a monthly fee from each household so they have a good size budget to take care of the local property.
